Brian

Certified Tutor

I am currently enrolled in the University of South Florida's Electrical Engineering Program pursuing my bachelors degree. I have a Pre-Engineering Associates in Arts degree from St. Petersburg College which means that most of my classes were math and science classes. I tutor math subjects ranging from basic Arithmetic all the way to Calculus I. I have experience tutoring privately and at a college campus. I love tutoring Algebra and Trigonometry because of their real world applications and although you may not see it in your everyday life, these two subjects are used in anything ranging from the computer or mobile devices you are currently using to powering your home with electricity. I strive to help students understand the material presented in a way that makes sense to the student because I know from my own experience as a student that not every teacher is able to relate the information in a way that makes sense. My passion is to help students do better and feel more confident with their studies.

What is your teaching philosophy?

If the student does not understand the material the way it is presented, I present it in as many ways as I can so it makes sense to the student, and they may learn and move forward in their studies.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

As I help the student with their work, I watch and learn from the student. I pay attention to their style of learning so I can better assist them in the future and mold my tutoring around their style so I may be of maximum service to them.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By encouraging and helping the student see that they already possess the skills needed to learn the material. I help them feel confident with using the tools so they may use them on their own.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By showing them that the subject I am tutoring is not just some bland subject they need to pass to get a good grade, but it has exciting applications.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will first identify the root cause of the problem, then help present the material in as many ways as possible until the student understands the material in a way that makes sense to him/her.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Patience, encouragement, and being able to present the subject in a way that caters to the student's learning style.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I will first find out the student's interests or career goals and show them that the subject they are learning has real applications in either their interest or future career.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By showing the student that they are able to do the problem with no help. I will create a problem and allow them to solve it on their own with the only input from me being that they are doing each step correctly.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By seeing where they are struggling, whether it be from a course before the current subject, or a learning style problem.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt by going through different styles or approaches until I see that 1) it catches the student's interest and 2) the student is understanding the material.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I typically will make up problems on the spot depending on the subject, a textbook, a learning tool website, or I will use the Internet to get information.
