Reflecting on my educational experiences, I realize what a great impact teachers and mentors can have on students and the difference they can make in their lives. When I was in elementary school, I was struggling with 3rd grade math and science. It was frustrating because no matter how much I tried I just could not solve the problems. At times I felt like giving up. It was then that my aunt introduced me to a private tutor who worked patiently and enthusiastically to help me understand the concepts and find solutions to those hard questions. Within weeks my grades improved and I started loving math and science. In high school I took AP level English, science and math classes which further lead me to major in Biology.
I am a certified live and online tutor based in Houston, TX. I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor's degree in English/Biology/Pre-med after which I decided to pursue a career in medicine. I spent two years in the Caribbean finishing my basic sciences and the remaining two years in the United States (New York, Chicago, Atlanta and Washington, DC) completing my clinical rotations in various hospitals. I graduated with a M.D. degree from the American university of Antigua and will be starting residency training next year. In the couple of years between my Undergraduate and medical schools studies, I worked as a substitute teacher for elementary, middle and high school students. While in medical school, I was a Teaching Assistant for Anatomy and Physiology. Therefore, I have experience working with students of all age groups. I really enjoy teaching and my passion and enthusiasm for it will make a good tutor.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Ask them what it is that they want to get out of this tutoring session and address any concerns they might have.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By helping them create a study schedule that caters to them.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Letting them know of my own personal experiences, and what helped me get motivated and excel in my subjects.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would simplify it for them based on what I feel is the best learning style for that particular student.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would take a step-by-step approach. I would ask them to focus on each paragraph and summarize it as we go along rather than look at an essay as a whole, and once we have gone through the entire essay, then summarize it in a few sentences.
