David
Certified Tutor
I am a 5th year PhD student at Washington State University. I enjoy helping students understand concepts in their math, chemistry, and physics classes. I have been tutoring for the past 5 years and have helped students of various backgrounds and needs. I will be able to help you understand the concepts so you can do better on your homework and tests. Additionally, I received my physics bachelor degree in physics from Washington State University as well.
My favorite subject to tutor is math, because I enjoy helping students see and understand patterns. I enjoy sports and I use analogies to help students understand and solve different problems.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My philosophy is to help students have confidence that they can understand the concepts and apply them in their homework in a test-like environment. By doing their homework in this environment, they are more prepared to do well on tests.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would first find out what the student expects from me as a tutor and what I would expect from them as a student. I would also explain my tutoring style and explain how it helps them understand the material and prepare them for tests.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
My first goal of any session or question presented by a tutor is to have them attempt to solve the question. In addition to that, I help them find the equations or concepts in their book so they can find them on their own.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I help them stay motivated by helping them see how the problems they are working on will help them in their everyday life.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I give examples on how to solve the problem and give analogies to understand the concept further.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would help them by giving them guides to most effectively remember and understand what they are reading.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
It is most successful to present an environment similar to what they experience when taking tests and completing their homework. That way, they can remember the work we do together more effectively.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I help them see the importance of the subject and encourage them to give it their best effort.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I ask questions and give additional problems to ensure the student understands the material.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
By helping the student solve problems and understand how to solve them. They build confidence by practicing problems and understanding the subject.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I interact with them by asking questions and observing what they struggle with.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I find out how they learn best and teach according to that method.
