Certified Tutor

I studied entrepreneurship at Creighton University. Since graduation in 2010 I've attended two years of Bible school and leadership training, started my own financial planning practice, and am currently in the funding phase for a second business. I also have 3 years of experience working with high school and college age students. What does that mean? A huge part of my knowledge base comes from experience! When studying and working with me you won't just work to learn, you'll put your learning to work.

Let's make learning practical. Let's do what it takes. Let's make you the best you possible.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Learn it practically. Apply it immediately. Integrate it thoroughly. Remember it eternally.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I need to learn a little about you. How do you feel you learn the best? Where is our starting point? What do you understand or not understand? What's the goal? After an overview session I can lay out a plan for ongoing sessions.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I give homework. By that I mean after each session I'll send you home with a learning principle or technique that you should apply in individual and group study.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Mastery and progress. A lot of studies show the most motivating factor for individuals is the thought of mastering something. I'll paint a picture of where you want to be and we'll devise a tangible way to measure your progress.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Explain it to me the best way you can. Let's debug that mind of yours. When you paint a picture of your understanding, together we can uncover what exactly is holding you back -- prior learning (either incorrect or lacking), misunderstanding, external influences, etc.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Let's make it interesting. I don't comprehend most of what I'm not interested in -- because I'm not paying attention! We'll find a way to make the reading content interesting and applicable to you and then implement key reading/study techniques that break down the content.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

As seemingly unimportant as it is, we need to like each other. The greater rapport we build day-1 the more motivated we are to cooperate to help you achieve your goals. This will help our planning and study strategies fall into place much quicker.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Think big! What kind of large-scale impact can this subject have on your goals and dreams? How will it help you with another subject? Start a business? Get into that college? Land that job? Impress that special someone?

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Teach me. "While we teach, we learn" -- Seneca

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Carefully place your benchmarks. Don't try to jump a 5' hurdle day one.
