What is your teaching philosophy?
I tailor individual study plans to help dedicated students reach their full potential with efficiency and accuracy.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would ask what each student's strengths and weaknesses are, then go over a number of questions that address those concepts. I would repeat tough questions to ensure the student understood them, and provide the student some online resources they might find useful.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I help students become independent by learning more about their study habits and their thought process when answering questions. I can then give them advice on how to improve these processes and succeed in an independent environment in the face of stresses like the test environment.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would help a student to stay motivated by asking how they are doing on a problem when they are having difficulty and providing coaching and tips, as well as providing positive feedback when they get problems correct.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would provide various tips on the problems, and acknowledge that there are a number of difficult problems that require the student to integrate multiple techniques. I would encourage the student to use certain formulas/techniques, and then give the student similar problems subsequently to ensure they understand the concept or skill.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would encourage the student to think about the material with certain things in mind- for example the main point/thesis, and any specific things like plot or style that the author is bringing up. I believe that although some reading is dense and hard to comprehend, students can work through it with dedication and practice to create intelligent analysis of material.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
The most successful strategies I have found while working with a student have been tailoring tutoring to their specific styles. I try to give practice questions based on their weaknesses and give them a variety of problems throughout the session.
