James

Certified Tutor

I am a math and science tutor with years of experience and a passion for helping young students realize their potential and achieve their goals.

I received my bachelor's degree in Architectural Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology. I am currently studying to become an actuary, having passed the first two exams. I am working toward the third exam, studying advanced calculus and probability theory.

I began tutoring in 2013 while working on my bachelor's degree, and have been doing so ever since. I have tutored several students in a variety of subjects in math and physics, from algebra 1 up through college level calculus, including ACT test prep.

Working one on one with students to help them achieve their academic goals has been a deeply rewarding experience for me. I cherish the opportunity to share my skills and experience with my students, and I make their success my highest priority. I believe that with hard work and the proper guidance any student can be successful.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that with hard work and the proper guidance any student can be successful. I work to identify the unique needs and strengths of each student so that I can create personal and effective lessons.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I try to get to know the student. I will talk with the student about their academic goals, where they're at in their coursework, and what their understanding of the subject has been. I'll develop a schedule and personalized lesson plans that meet their individual needs to give my student the best chance for success.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help students become independent learners by providing them with the tools to answer questions rather than just giving them the answers themselves. I work hard to communicate a general understanding of the subject, and encourage them to think critically and independently to solve problems.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I always try to provide positive encouragement and to bring attention to the progress they've made. I also try to set specific and achievable goals to help keep the student interested and engaged.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I think that there are always multiple ways to approach a problem. I've seen with students that a concept that seems very confusing can often become clear when shown from a different perspective. I try to understand the individual learning style of the student so that I can present the material in a manner best suited to them.
