I found a joy for tutoring while helping my college football teammates with their math courses. I currently help my niece who is in the 5th grade with al her math courses. I love math and science and willingly use my knowledge to help others. I am a visual learner and would use visual mediums to help with tutoring. What is your teaching philosophy?

Visual aids.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Tell the student about myself and give the student some time to tell me about themselves. This would give them a chance to state any educational goal them might have

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would show them how to navigate their textbooks for answers.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would try to tie subject matter with their interests.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Take a break and revisit later if possible; a break can do a lot in knowledge retention.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would tie the subject matter with their interests.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

The classic reversal of roles-- have the student teach me.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I learned from playing sports that practice = confidence.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Charts, graphs, diagrams...anything colorful.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Have them highlight and take notes of important things while reading; this will help them identify what is important while reading.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

When I start working with a student, I like to find out what their interests are so I can tie in subject matter with their interests.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By first plaining asking them what they think their strengths and weakness are; maybe a quick quiz.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

If a student's needs demand for more of an applied approach, I would help with their application of concepts, and if their needs are more conceptual I would help with understanding and deriving each concept.
