What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that all students can learn and that each should be given equal opportunities to learn and grow.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a first session with a student I would spend time on a personal level, getting to know him or her and what their interests are.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can help a student become an independent learner by helping him or her believe in themselves and setting them up for success.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would help a student stay motivated by varying the lessons. I would achieve this by using manipulatives and materials that are of interest.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
If a student has difficulty learning a new skill or concept, I would change my approach, use new materials and manipulatives, and search to find an answer as to why the student is having difficulty.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
To help students with reading comprehension, I would make certain that the student is reading materials at the correct level. I would make sure to offer reading materials that are of high interest.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
I have found that spending time getting to know a student personally is a successful strategy.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
When a student is struggling to get excited or engaged in a subject, I would make certain that I am using materials that are age and level appropriate.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I would use informal assessments to make sure that a student understands the material.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I would work to build a student's confidence in a subject by allowing him to choose materials that are engaging and able to be mastered.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
I evaluate a student's needs by knowing them well, making sure that I am communicating with parents and teachers, and assessing work that is being completed.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I adapt my tutoring to the student's needs by making sure that I am on the appropriate level to assure academic success.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
The materials that I use during a tutoring session vary according to the needs of the student. I use math manipulatives, videos and websites that are engaging, academic based games, and reading materials that are age and level appropriate.
