I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Laura

Certified Tutor

I am a recent graduate of Haverford College, where I majored in Psychology and minored in Health Studies. I am interested in educational and social psychology, and would like to go back to school to get a PhD in clinical psychology. In my spare time, I enjoy going on long runs, reading Russian novels, and attending Broadway shows.

Through my five previous years of tutoring middle school, high school, and college students, I saw firsthand how diverse student learning styles can be. For example, one explanation of the concept of absolute value may be helpful to one student, but utterly confusing to another. I am a great tutor because I make it a priority to discover each individual student's problem areas and create unique lesson plans and methods of instruction. I am also extremely patient and thorough when reviewing concepts and practice problems; I am more than willing to discuss a concept two or three times in varying ways if that is what the student requires. Furthermore, I always make sure to communicate effectively with parents/guardians so that they are aware of their children's progress and understand the teaching landmarks I have set for the student.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that all students are capable of learning. No student can claim that he or she is simply "not good" in a certain area. With a positive attitude and a willingness to work hard, I believe every student has the potential to succeed in every academic area.
