What is your teaching philosophy?

My philosophy of teaching is simple; to enable my students to move from struggling with the subject to a love of learning that accompanies pride in their accomplishments. I believe in life long learning and being the cornerstone to unlocking the potential that each and every one of my students has inside of them.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The most important thing is to assess my student to determine the focus of my lessons. I will be tracking goals and achievements so that their progress can be accurately measured.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

To help a student to become an independent learner I will first assess the student to find out what his or her needs are. I will model the material. After that the student is lead in guided practice. Independent practice follows with a final assessment.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Add some fun! It is important to take a subject that is frustrating and make it interesting.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If my student were to have difficulty learning a skill or concept, I would first look to make sure that I am teaching them in their correct learning style. A student who is a visual learner cannot learn from verbal directions. Once I know the best way that they learn I then look to see other ways in which I can teach the same concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I have numerous reading strategies from when I was teaching in the public schools.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I find that getting to build trust is key. The student needs to know that I am there for them to be able to succeed in something that is difficult for them.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would have to say break the subject down and make sure that the student understands the material. No one will be able to be excited and engaged if they do not understand the basic concepts. I also like to include games and contests.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Again, I go back to assessment. I would need to keep records of the student's progress so that I can make the time that I spend with him or her as productive as possible.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

In order for a student to be confident in the subject they need to be comfortable with the material. It is my job to break it down into parts that the student will be able to absorb. Through the process of modeling, guided practice, independent practice and assessment, I am able to help him or her gain confidence.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By combining engaging lessons with their unique learning style.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Books are used for modeling and guided practice. Then I will play some type of game to build on the skill.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

A short, basic assessment along with input from the parents and teachers.
