My name is Sydney. I'm a high school math teacher in Detroit, MI. I love building relationships with my students as I believe this helps motivate them to want to push harder. I teach because I want to show others that they can succeed in math even though it is challenging.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe students need to try first, even if it may stump them initially. I always ask my students questions to get them to think on their own when they're asking for help.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would introduce myself and ask what they are struggling with and why. I will ask what they've tried so far. We can go over some problems they've brought, and I can also provide problems.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Whenever my students ask me for help, I always ask them questions. Most of them hate this, but they feel rewarded when they finally figured things out on their own.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I say statements like, "You're close," "You're on the right track," "I like your thinking," and "You got it!" As corny as this may seem, people like to receive affirmation for their effort.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I sit down with them and go back through it until they get it. If it means this student needs more one-on-one, so be it. If they need more practice problems, I'm all for it. I praise them as they accomplish steps for the particular skill or concept.
