What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe that a passion for learning is contagious, and a joy in teaching encourages participation and engagement in learning.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Tutoring is more private and personal, hence I spend time building mutual trust and confidence. It is essential to identify why the student seeks tutoring, what they expect from tutoring, and how much time and effort they are willing to spend. Next, we will prioritize objectives and develop a game-plan together. Lastly, I want to dive into the material and give the student something immediately useful after their first meeting.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
A student cannot become an independent learner through imitation. Questioning, examining, and understanding why a method or technique works, as well as learning how to choose between them is the goal. Some patterns are grasped intuitively after the routine is learned; other solution methods are only understood once their validity has been scrutinized.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Motivation is usually not a problem when gains are rapid and visible. Only when progress is not visible do such doubts weigh on the mind. It is therefore necessary to take a cumulative assessment to reassess old skills and reevaluate current methods to make sure that progress is taking place and it is visible.
