Evan
Certified Tutor
I am currently a Master's student with hopes of attending medical school in the near future. I have multiple years of experience tutoring Biology courses with an emphasis on Human Anatomy and Physiology. Throughout the tutoring and learning process, I try to incorporate real life examples of how Biology and Anatomy and Physiology are all around us at any given moment. By doing this, I think it not only helps students learn more efficiently, but it makes learning more enjoyable overall.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I try to incorporate the principles of Bloom's Taxonomy into my tutoring curriculum. This provides an effective and simple manner for students to monitor how they are progressing through the given material at any one time.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
My ultimate goal for any student is to love learning as much as I do. As a student spends time with me through tutoring, I will introduce effective study habits and methods to increase the amount of learning on their own. I want all of my students to become independent learners, because then they can have the freedom to learn anything they desire!
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
There are two main techniques I use to ensure a student understands the material. First, I have students do practice questions after we have been studying material for a few days. My other technique I enjoy using is role reversal. This is where I become the student and they become the teacher, and I have them teach me the material. This has been shown to be the most effective way in having mastery of a subject.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a first session with a student, I want to know what their goals are and what their plan is to accomplish those goals. Whether it be learning how to study, learning a new topic, or preparing for a test, I can be of assistance. After setting goals with a student, I will then ask simple questions to see how much knowledge they have of the subject they are interested in. After this, we will make a plan for subsequent tutoring lessons together.
