Ensure they complete certain problems 100% by themselves before asking me questions.

Show them examples of people that have succeeded, even when society said they were not supposed to.

Break it down. Then break it down into smaller steps.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Sound it out. Take it very slow. Rest. Repeat.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Relate it to something they enjoy in their life.
