My name is Reid, and I am excited to be able to help students in any of the subject areas I can. I am a recent graduate of Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Oregon. I graduated with a Degree in Political Science and a minor in Philosophy. I was also a tutor at my school's Writing Center. My main areas of strength in terms of tutoring are English, American Literature, World and American History, and American and Comparative Government.
I became interested in tutoring through my work at the university, meeting many students from diverse backgrounds. My school had a lot of foreign students, and I was delighted to be able to work with them and learn a little about their cultures as well. I find tutoring a great way to help others as well as meet fascinating people.

What is your teaching philosophy?
I don't believe in lecturing students, especially as a tutor. It should be a conversation of equals, a helping hand rather than a superior. The student will learn more and be motivated to remember the information.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would introduce myself briefly and describe my own experience with the relevant topic so the student knows where I am coming from. I would then ask the student what they are particularly struggling with or need more help on.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Rather than simply answering their questions point blank, tutors can try to get the answers out of the students themselves. Often, the student does know the answer or can figure it out with a little guidance. This way they realize they have the skills and knowledge to do well on their own.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would try to show them how much they do know rather than emphasizing how much they still have to learn. I would try to get them to offer something about every topic or answer so that they see for themselves their own knowledge and ability. This way they will get motivated and stay interested and hopeful for their own success.
