David

Certified Tutor

I like being a tutor because I like to help students to achieve their goals, and to have better understanding of topics that will help them to advance in their studies. I am good for this job because I have patience, I know different ways to explain concepts, and I know the subjects that I am trying to explain. I have been a tutor in the past and achieved good results from students. I have experience with math and science subjects since I studied Biology, Engineering and Administration at a University level. Outside of academic work I like to travel, hiking, literature, movies, paint and music.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Teaching should be a fun and interesting process through which the student is able to learn more skills and increase intellectual development to deal with academic and life challenges.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Try to establish a friendly environment to know each other a bit and figure out which are the student's main concerns regarding an academic subject.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can give him advice about how that process works and which tools he can use.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Through making constant reference to his progress and the achievements that the student can have in the future.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I'll find the difficulty and, according to it, design a learning plan that suits the situation.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

This can be achieved through explaining concept by concept and how these concepts fit in a general context.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Show interest for the student, and find the most useful materials and ways to help solve any kind of learning obstacle.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Through showing that student the importance of the things that he/she is learning and how they can be used in a job or life activities.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Asking practical oral questions about the functioning of a theory or problem and solving practical and theoretical exercises.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

The confidence is mostly built through skills, practice, and analysis. The more skills a student has will help to master concepts and be able to solve problems; more practice will give more background and expertise, and the analysis will give the ability to solidify the skills and ways to practice.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate it through listening to the student and exposing him/she through different subjects' aspects.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

This is done through communication, which will let me know the student's points of struggle or confusion and how it is better to approach and solve them.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Books, videos, real-life examples, games, websites, and dialogue.
