What is your teaching philosophy?

To make studying fun and not just a task!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Discuss with them about what challenges they feel they are facing in a given subject.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teach them study skills and help them to develop good study habits so they can succeed.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

With lots of encouragement and positive reinforcement.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Explain it in another way and provide more examples until they understand.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Review and ask questions so they can grasp the main point.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Get to know that student's needs by asking questions, and see what they perceive as their challenge... lots of talking is key.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Talk about it in a way that relates to that student, e.g.: relating it to a movie/ tv show or something that interests them.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Review questions throughout the session, and even a mini-quiz at the end to check their comprehension of the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

With lots of encouragement when the student responds correctly, and also by going over concepts they are not as confident in.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Asking the student what they think is their greatest difficult regarding the subject, and then checking their skills through the session.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I change the focus based on the student's needs according to my session assessment. If they need to work on comprehension rather than writing, for example, then the session would shift directions.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The student's textbook is primary. But once certain areas need additional support or education, then I will bring some of my own resource materials to aid the student's needs.
