Most of my teaching involves instructing non-traditional graduate and undergraduate students in the practical application of business and management concepts. Given the varied (and often unique) backgrounds of our students, this has often posed an andragogical challenge. In our typical management scenario, I regularly have students with no training in interpersonal relations or management. The goal of those initial lectures will then acquaint students with a practical working knowledge of management, human relationships, and leadership principles. This approach is rarely met with resistance, often leading students to appreciate their chosen academic career path and creating a decision to further pursue degrees in business and accounting. However, I find the most success when I find students use the problem-solving skill-sets I teach in their everyday lives. I try to convey the importance of a rigorous study and examination of textbooks and outside readings to improve the classroom experience and therefore, a student's overall education. The modern approach to education, with a blend of technology-based learning and in-class didactic learning lends itself well to the particular was in which I would like to teach. Particular use of these examples in my class lectures emphasizes the relevance of continual self-improvement (education) to modern management and leadership. Whenever possible, I try to present the information in a manner that invites participation from the class so that further enhances the learning experience. The end goal is always to reinforce the principles of success and to see the application in the students' lives, especially when said student encounter similar problems later in their career.
