I have always been passionate about teaching. I am the oldest of 4. In the summer when I was young, we would play school, and I would be the teacher. At Boston University, I earned a BA in Latin/ French and Education. I then traveled to the University of Michigan where I held a teaching fellowship position in Latin while I worked on my MA in Latin. I am retired from a formal teaching position but tutor/teach via Facetime my 10 and 12 year-old grandsons. They live 500 miles away!!
I want to tutor in Latin because that is where my expertise lies. I have spent about 9 years working in elementary schools with K-5 reading and writing also, and I loved that and feel very competent to tutor in those areas.
I believe in being kind but firm with students and getting to know them as people besides just as those I tutor.
I am a retired teacher of more than 30 years' experience in about 6 different states. I have done tutoring all along the way besides being in classrooms.
I especially enjoy seeing beginning Latin students advance to competency and learn about the Romans, etc. while studying their language. I have worked with students from 3rd grade through 12. I taught college Freshmen at the University of Michigan.
I was also am licensed as a k-12 librarian because I love reading and the organization of a good library.
I am involved in criminal justice reform advocacy here in VA as a volunteer working with legislators and others to get meaningful bills passed. I am a director of an organization with those goals.
