I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Robin

Certified Tutor

With studies focusing on General Science and Biology, I received my B.S. at East Tennessee State University. My diverse background led me to train as School Counseling with a M.Ed. at the same university. I obtained an Ed.S. in Curriculum at Lincoln Memorial University. (An Ed.S. usually counts as the first part of a doctorate.) I have taken other courses to enhance my science teaching at Charleston College (University), North Carolina University, Augusta College, and the University of Tennessee.

I began tutoring my Freshman Year in college until graduation. Since graduation, I have taught and counseled 33 years and have recently retired due to an injury. Luckily I can work at home sitting down so that I can continue working with students.

My favorite type of student is the student who thinks they can't learn but will try. I also like the kids who act too cool for class because they have had bad experiences in school. I love to connect with kids who feel they are different and those that have problems. I have always taken time after class for these students. I like students who learn easily and want to learn more. My least favorite personalities are groups of kids distracting others.

For years I have asked my students anonymously what they want from me as a teacher and for the most part the answers I get are someone who cares about me and someone who helps me learn. Of course there are one or two that say let me sleep. They don't enjoy my class much. So if you want to learn I am the teacher for you.

I explain things simply and will reteach as needed. I explain "fancy" words like "correlate" or "infer" in everyday language to build vocabulary and help the students understand the material better. So many students do not understand action verbs in math and science.

I believe in education passionately and all students should have a solid core knowledge. However, I believe in Technical Training and treat students on this path with the same respect as college-bound students. In today's society this a viable, lucrative and educationally challenging choice.

I have 3 pets at the moment because I love animals. I am very creative inside and outside of education. I wish women would have been encouraged to go into advertising when I was in college. I think I have wicked advertising skills. I like to draw but am not good at it. Mostly I draw designs of a room I am decorating or remodeling. Besides creativity and animals, I love to know about other cultures and beliefs. Thoughts and values intrigue me. I like to know what makes someone " tick". This of course helps me teach and tutor.

I look forward to meeting you and hope we are a great fit!
