I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Claire

Certified Tutor

I have a PhD in Humanities and Culture (Union Institute & University), a Master's in Management (John F. Kennedy University), a Master's in Interdepartmental Speech (Northwestern), a Bachelor's in English and Speech/Drama (California State University), and a Black Belt in Aikido. My most recent work was as a GED teacher/tutor helping at-risk youth (16-21) study and pass their GED tests in any or all of the four subjects (Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading/Writing ("Reasoning through Language Arts"). We worked either one-on-one or in small groups for personalized instruction. At least 8 of my students earned their GED certificates. We only had 3-9 months together, so it wasn't always possible to get through all four tests, but my students passed at least 25 individual GED tests, so I'm familiar with preparing for a standardized test. I also worked as a member of the Advanced Adjunct Faculty for the University of Phoenix where I taught a variety of communication (public speaking, composition, etc.) and other liberal studies courses like teamwork, popular culture, and humanities. Although we all face some areas that are harder to learn than others, patience, positivity, and persistence are the keys I share for learning anything. I certainly went through a lot of bruises in the 8 or so years it took me to get my black belt! Patience and persistence paid off. I'd love to go to the mat to help you study for your test.
