Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of the University of British Columbia. I received a Bachelor of Arts in History where I focused on colonial economic history in Africa and then decided to obtain a Bachelor of Education in Secondary Social Studies Education. I was very privileged to be able to travel extensively and live abroad during my degrees, including in India and Uganda. After graduating with my B.A I moved to Ghana to completed a fellowship with a Canadian development organization. I worked with youth opening small businesses in Northern Ghana and here fell in love with entrepreneurship. While I was in Ghana, COVID started changing the world and I made it back to Vancouver 5 days before the airport was closed. I had plans to study for a M.A in Belgium but decided to stay close to home due to COVID and my family pushed me to consider formal teaching after doing it informally for so many years and I am so grateful they did push me into it. I fell in love with education during my BEd and received the Maxwell A. Cameron Memorial Award for Education students promoting global change through teaching. During my practicum in White Rock, B.C, I taught Philosophy 12 and Social Studies 10. After graduating I moved to Somaliland, a small unrecognised country in the north of Somalia to teach at a teachers training college for women. I led the Exceptional Education department which focused on teaching future teachers how to support students with exceptional needs. Following this, I moved to Bahrain in the Middle East to teach Grade 4 at a Canadian International School. After a long year of teaching grade 4 I wanted to take a break from classroom teaching and decided to move to Zanzibar, Tanzania, to work with a Canadian development organization and informally teach young women about entrepreneurship. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about History, Social Studies, Philosophy, and reading intervention. I believe that education changes the world and I am motivated to support my students in becoming leaders of their own learning through inquiry and critical thinking. I was not a fan of school but I love learning and I try to impart this appreciation to all of my students, even those who may feel underwhelmed (to say the least) by school. I love travelling and learning about new cultures and have been privileged to live in 9 countries now and travel to many others. I enjoy listening to music, dancing in my living room, swimming, dogs, and nature.

Hobbies

I love travelling and learning about new cultures. I have lived in 9 countries including 4 in Africa; my favourite continent. One of the best things about travelling is the food! I am an avid eater and foodie. I most recently lived in Zanzibar, a tropical paradise off the coast of Tanzania in East Africa. I loved swimming in the ocean by day and eating fresh fruit and seafood at night. I love nature and have a deep respect and passion for Indigenous stewardship and ways of knowing. I love reading and getting lost in a good book. I am a business owner and am passionate about learning about entrepreneurship and investing. I love animals and recently adopted a kitten. Music is a key part of my life and you’ll almost always find me jamming along to something. Most of all I love learning.
