Varsity Tutors has prepared a Cleveland ISEE course that can help students in their ISEE preparation. Finding the right prep course can be a challenging task since parents and students need to consider not only the schedule of the lessons but the location and how long it takes to travel to the class. With an online course provided by Varsity Tutors and sections that open every week, students can have a more convenient way to study for the ISEE.
The ISEE, or the Independent School Entrance Examination, is used by private elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools as one of the requirements for admissions. There are different levels of the test given to specific grade levels, but it has the same test sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics. There is an unscored essay, which is meant to give schools more information about the student.
In general, the higher the score of a student on the ISEE, the more options he or she may have when choosing schools. Participating in a Cleveland ISEE class can help students get a good start on their ISEE prep study. In the class, students will work with qualified academic instructors on how to answer test questions effectively. Instructors can also help students gain the academic skills necessary to perform at their best during exam day.
What could a Cleveland ISEE course help me review?
There are four different levels for the ISEE. Let's take a closer look at them:
- Primary Level - this is given to students applying for Grades 2 to 4.
- Lower Level - this is given to students applying for Grades 5 and 6.
- Middle Level - this is for students who plan to start Grade 7 and 8.
- Upper Level - this is for students who plan to start Grade 9 to 12.
All of the levels have the same sections except the Primary Level test given to students applying for Grade 2. For this particular version of the exam, an Auditory Comprehension section is included where students need to listen to passages and answer six questions about those passages. The four scored sections similar to all test levels are Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Mathematics. Remember that there is a fifth, unscored Essay section as well for all levels.
Here are some of the topics and key concepts that students will work on during their ISEE course per test section:
Verbal Reasoning
For this section, students are generally tested for their reasoning ability and vocabulary knowledge. For the Primary and Lower levels, vocabulary knowledge includes synonyms and sentence completion where they need to use context clues to answer the questions. For the Middle and Upper levels, this section tests middle and high school-level vocabulary, synonyms, parts of speech, and using prefixes, suffixes, and root words.
Quantitative Reasoning
For this section, students taking the Lower level of ISEE need to use their skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. They also need to identify the characteristics of geometric objects and find the probability of a simple event.
Students who are taking the Middle level will be tested on concepts such as working with integers, percents, decimals, and fractions. They also need to do operations involving variables, do square roots, calculate the area of quadrilaterals, and use formulas to calculate measurements.
For the Upper level, Quantitative Reasoning will test concepts like solving equations and working variables and exponents. Students will also be tested on their skills in finding the mean, median, and mode; finding the area and perimeter of geometric shapes, and; analyzing, interpreting, and making inferences about a data set.
Reading Comprehension
For this section, the Primary level has multiple-choice questions that test reading comprehension and grade-appropriate vocabulary, while the Lower level tests the student's skills in finding the main idea and locating important information in a text.
For the Middle and Upper levels, Reading Comprehension has questions that require students to use their skills in comparing and contrasting, identifying cause and effect, making inferences, and using figurative and literal language.
Mathematics For this section, the Primary level has multiple-choice questions that assess a student's mathematics abilities, including basic math operations at a grade-appropriate level. The Lowe level also requires students to do simple operations but includes geometry and algebraic concepts. For the Middle level, the Math section deals with concepts such as integer comparison, multiples, prime factorization, and relatively prime numbers, while the Upper level tests on concepts like working with variables and exponents; finding mean, median, mode, range, sets; finding the area and perimeter of geometric shapes, working with quadrilaterals and triangles, the use of coordinate grids.
Essay For this unscored section, students taking the Primary level will be shown a picture prompt and asked to write a story about the picture. For the Lower level, students will be asked something about a topic of interest at the elementary level and they need to answer based on the instructions of the prompt. The Middle and Upper levels will also ask students about grade-appropriate topics and they must write about their perspective on these topics.
