You'd like to earn a high score on your SAT in order to have your pick of universities, but how do you that and where do you start? Varsity Tutors can help you reach for your target score with a Detroit SAT course handled by experienced academic instructors and conducted online in virtual classrooms. Joining a review course for the SAT can provide you with the thorough review you need to perform at your best during exam day and help you develop effective study habits that may also be very useful in your future academic life.
High school students in the Detroit area, including students from Cranbrook Schools and Troy High School, often take the SAT during the spring of their junior year. Some others choose to take - or retake it - in the fall of their senior year. The SAT serves as a common point of consideration for colleges and universities when making admission decisions. Schools take your SAT score together with your high school GPA and other references such as letters of recommendation from teachers, extracurricular activities, and personal essays in order to make an informed decision about your college application. In general, the higher your score on the SAT, the more options you can have when it comes to your college education. Attending a Detroit SAT class could be an excellent way to elevate the level and quality of your study and try to score as high as possible on the test.
What could a Detroit SAT course help me review?
In your SAT review course, you will work on the contents of the exam and practice smarter strategies in test-taking. The SAT is made up of two main sections-Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing-and students are given 3 hours to finish the multiple-choice questions. An important point to remember is to not skip any item when answering in order not to lose a point. There is no penalty for guessing, so it is better to answer every question on the test.
There is an optional SAT Essay section that tests a student's writing skills and the ability to understand and present arguments. This optional section adds 50 minutes to the 3 hours allotted for the required Math and Reading and Writing. Let's look at the required sections in detail.
Math Section
The Math section of the SAT is composed of 58 questions that you should complete in 80 minutes. This is the longest section in terms of time and number of items you need to answer. The questions here will assess your algebra skills, problem-solving and analytical skills, and ability to understand and solve mathematical expressions. The scoring range is between 200 to 800 and features calculator and no-calculator portions.
For the no-calculator portion, you have to answer 15 multiple-choice questions and 5 grid-ins within 25 minutes, while the calculator portion has 30 multiple-choice questions and 8 grid-ins that you need to finish in 55 minutes. You may also face several questions asking about a single scenario.
The specific subjects covered in the Math section include:
- Heart of Algebra. Here you need to tackle problems involving linear equations and systems.
- Problem Solving and Data Analysis. You need to solve problems based on data presented to you.
- Passport to Advanced Math. You need to understand the structure of different mathematical expressions and be able to analyze, manipulate, and rewrite these expressions.
Evidence-Based Reading and Writing
The Reading section has 52 questions that you need to answer in 65 minutes. You will need to read passages taken from contemporary or classic US or world literature, the United States founding documents, social sciences, and passages examining developments and foundational concepts in physics, chemistry, biology, or Earth science. The scoring range is between 200 to 800 combined with the SAT Writing and Language test.
This section will also test a wide range of skills:
- Command of Evidence - You need to find evidence in the passages or point out the information or details that support a sound conclusion. You will also need to analyze the author's arguments and identify relationships between text and accompanying data
- Words in Context - You need to use context clues in order to interpret the meanings of words and phrases. You will also identify how word choices affect tone, style, and meaning.
- Analysis in History/Social Studies and in Science - You need to understand the meaning of the passage and draw inferences and conclusions.
For the Writing and Language test, you need to answer 44 questions in 35 minutes. All the questions will come from written passages that may include tables, graphs, and charts. Some of the skills that will be assessed in this section include:
- Expression of Ideas - You need to answer questions about a passage's organization and impact and make word choice and structural changes to improve clarity.
- Standard English Conventions - You will be tested on grammar and usage including word choice, clauses, sentences, and punctuation. You also need to tackle questions about verb tense, parallel construction, subject-verb agreement, comma use, and sentence structure.
