If you have been searching for a comprehensive Las Vegas ISEE prep course, Varsity Tutors provides one of the best options on the market. The ISEE (or Independent School Entrance Examination) is a high-stakes examination utilized by private and independent schools to fairly compare admission candidates from different backgrounds. It is divided into four levels based on the grade level a test-taker is heading to: Primary (2nd-4th grade), Lower (5th-6th), Middle (7th-8th), and Upper (9th grade and up).

Most schools consider criteria besides ISEE scores in their admission decisions, but a good score could be the first step in helping your student pursue their goals. If you want to help them make the most of their test prep, we can enroll them in a Las Vegas ISEE class that covers everything they need to know on exam day. Keep reading to learn more about the value we can offer.

What subject areas does a Las Vegas ISEE course typically cover?

The Primary Level ISEE is divided into separate exams for each grade level: Primary 2, Primary 3, and Primary 4. Primary 2 has an exclusive Auditory Comprehension section where students answer questions based on a passage somebody reads to them. Otherwise, all three tests have the same basic structure: Reading and Math sections that assess grade-appropriate skills, and a Writing section that gives schools a sense of each student's personality.

Similarly, the Lower, Middle, and Upper ISEEs each contain the same five sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Math Achievement, and an Essay. While the material gets harder as test-takers get older, all three exams have the same time allotted and number of items to complete. Here is a closer look at what you can expect on each part of the test:

Verbal Reasoning

The test's Verbal Reasoning component measures a test-taker's age-appropriate vocabulary skills through sentence completions and synonyms. Students at all levels are expected to know how to effectively utilize context clues, while students at the Middle Level and above are also expected to understand Greek and Latin word roots, prefixes, suffixes, and word clues. Test-takers have 20 minutes to answer 40 multiple-choice questions on this section, so there is no time to waste.

Quantitative Reasoning

The ISEE's Quantitative Reasoning section emphasizes mathematical thinking skills, leaving mathematical operations to a different segment of the test. The Lower Level ISEE covers topics such as probability and multiplication, the Middle Level ISEE square roots and percentages, and the Upper Level ISEE exponents and working with data sets. Students have 35 minutes to answer 37 multiple-choice items on this section.

Reading Comprehension

The exam's Reading Comprehension portion consists of several reading passages. Students at all levels are asked to identify the main idea, supporting details, and determine what an author's intent was with a particular piece. Middle Level ISEE test-takers are also asked to draw inferences, distinguish between figurative and literal language, and conduct compare/contrast analyses. Upper Level test-takers are asked to do all of that across literary genres, making it more difficult. Students have 35 minutes to answer 36 multiple-choice questions on this section.

Math Achievement

The ISEE's Math Achievement section emphasizes mathematical operations, meaning that quantitative problem-solving skills are the order of the day. Students at the Lower Level answer questions on topics such as decimals and estimation, while students taking the Middle Level ISEE deal with more complex subjects such as the geometry of triangles and quadrilaterals. Students taking the Upper Level ISEE have to solve algebraic equations and use coordinate grids among several other topics. Test-takers have 40 minutes to answer 47 multiple-choice items on this section.

Essay

Finally, the ISEE essay is a 30-minute writing prompt that allows students to introduce themselves to each school they are applying to. A copy is provided with each application using an ISEE score, allowing schools to evaluate a student's work for themselves rather than relying on a third party's score.

What are the benefits of enrolling my student in a Las Vegas ISEE course?

If your student takes a Las Vegas ISEE class, they will attend regular class sessions that cover both the academic skills demanded by the appropriate level and test-taking strategies to boost their self-confidence heading into the exam. Each class teacher is a great communicator with extensive knowledge about the ISEE, so you can count on all of the information presented to your student proving correct and up to date.

Your student will also study with several others on our live virtual platform during their Las Vegas ISEE class, and this is a good thing. Students can interact with one another as well as their teacher, so they can help each other out while their instructor covers material on the exam in depth. Everybody can also work together to establish a collaborative learning environment to deepen their understanding of how the test works. For example, reading all of the Reading questions associated with a particular passage before the passage itself allows students to know exactly what they are looking for in the selection.

Multiple students sharing a virtual classroom also means that they can split the bill, making expert test prep more affordable than many people think. If you feel as though your student could benefit from personalized attention, you can also arrange private study time with the class teacher to go over any areas of need.

We also try to make each class as convenient to attend as possible. We offer both two and four-week sessions, making it easier to find something that works for students with busy lives. We also start new classes every week, so we're ready to get to work as soon as you are.
