MCAT Verbal Reasoning Tutoring FAQ

For many pre-medical undergraduates, the MCAT poses the greatest challenge and barrier between themselves and medical school. The exam rigorously drills students on their scientific studies, covering everything from quantum theory to molecular biology and organic chemistry. The emphasis during MCAT study is generally directed toward memorizing the various formulae, relationships, and structures that are tested in the science sections.

With so much material to retain for the science sections, the MCAT Verbal Reasoning section can serve as an unpleasant surprise come exam day. Though it may at first appear similar to reading comprehension and English sections on other standardized tests, the MCAT Verbal Reasoning section is a beast all its own. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with a highly skilled and experienced private MCAT Verbal Reasoning tutor to help you zero in on the areas of this exam section that present you with the most difficulty.

Recent MCAT Verbal Reasoning Tutoring Session Notes

Online MCAT Verbal Reasoning Tutoring review by Jeremy
We began the session by reviewing some of the key issues and solutions identified in our first session, including making more of an effort to make connections while reading, primarily being conscious of structural elements of the passage. He seemed to think that reading the questions before the passage was helpful, though he needs to be conscious of not spending to much time reading the questions and of letting the questions guide his focus but not fully determine it. We then discussed a couple of short passage "maps" that he had written about passages done since our last session and focused further on his need to generalize and interpret rather than just summarize. Our goal is to spend more time reading the passage initially, so that it is not necessary to refer back to the passage when answering most questions. Time is an issue, but I suggested he not focus on time just yet while he practices the new approach. If progress continues, we will focus on time next week.

We went over a practice exam in the review workbook. Also, the student and I discussed best practices along with feedback on how she did on the passages in terms of timing, the identification of main ideas, types of passages she encountered and a timeline of what she needs to do by the next time we meet. She will do 2 passages at least every other day and then review them the next day. She is showing strong improvement in the verbal reasoning section.

For the first 15-20 minutes I went over a general strategy in approaching the VR section - making tables to track time & paragraph comments. Then for the next hour or so we did all the VR passages (5) from the exam preview guide. We would compare notes we wrote down from the passages & then discuss any questions we missed. For the next session, the student & I will be going over more difficult passages.

We continued to go over different types of questions on Verbal Reasoning and how to solve them. She is still not seeing improvement in her scores however. Timing is a large problem for her and reading comprehension in general. We are meeting one more time before her exam. She is planning on retaking it again in a few months.
