Recent CST - California Standards Test Tutoring Session Notes
We finished the entire Writing section for SAT #1. We also reviewed one math section; he has shown great improvements in both sections.
We focused on math this session. We worked from the SAT prep book and studied the pick-a-number strategy. We also reviewed percents using examples like sales tax and price increases.
During this session, the student worked on two reading passages. They were different but had similarities, so he had to answer questions on each and one set of questions that covered both passages. Before the student started reading, I suggested a new strategy for him: write notes in the margin to summarize sections of the passage. He used the strategy well and it helped him in his comprehension so that he was able to answer more higher-order questions correctly. I assigned him homework consisting of a set of short answer questions covering both passages.
Today we covered number lines, subtraction (speed), addition, and long multiplication and division. She is working very hard! We started working on PEMDAS and math symbols she had not seen. She is doing very well in vocabulary and reading comprehension!
We went over fractions, decimals, percents, area, perimeter and volume. She remembered fractions, decimals and percents fairly well. We also pre-tested over science and will work through more of the material for that test in future sessions.
During this session, the student and I worked on the "document-based" questions from an old test. We worked on improving her ability to pull the pertinent information from the documents and using that information to develop a response to the essay prompt. I think that the student's reading comprehension is definitely improving, but I think that it will be important for us to continue to work on it.
