If you're preparing to take the MCAT, then Varsity Tutors can help you get more out of your study sessions with an in-depth Memphis MCAT preparation option. You may have decided to take this exam if you plan on applying to a local medical school like the University of Tennessee College of Medicine. However, the medical school admissions process is extremely competitive. There are far more applicants to medical schools in the United States each year than there are available admissions slots. Performing well on the MCAT is one way to separate yourself from the field of applicants that you're competing with at the schools you apply to.
Still, the MCAT is a challenging exam that can be hard to prepare for without any guidance. That's where Varsity Tutors comes in. We'd love to get you started with the Memphis MCAT prep plan of your choice so that you can start developing a more complete understanding of the MCAT's material. Get in touch with us today if you think that you would benefit from this type of test preparation assistance. You can also keep reading for more information on the MCAT and the ways in which we can help you prepare for it.
What's covered on the MCAT?
The MCAT is a challenging exam because it requires knowledge in a number of different academic disciplines. The test takes place over a 7 and a half hour day, as well. This means that testing stamina is very important when taking the MCAT. The purpose of the MCAT is to assess how prepared medical school applicants are for success in the demanding medical school environment. To that end, the exam has four sections, which each focus on a different skill set that is required for success in medical school and when working as a physician.
The first MCAT section is called Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems. This test section focuses a lot on the subjects of biology and chemistry. You'll need to know about the functions of the body's tissues and organs, the chemical and physical processes that underlie the human body's mechanisms, and more. This section has a 95-minute time limit and consists of 59 total questions.
Next, you'll take a section called Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills. This part of the MCAT is a little different than the others in that it doesn't focus on science topics. Instead, this section is concerned with measuring your reading comprehension, verbal reasoning, and analytical skills. You'll be tasked with reading through a number of passages and then answering a handful of questions about each passage. This section is made up of 53 questions and has a time limit of 90 minutes.
Third, you'll also take the MCAT section called Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems. This part of the test focuses on things like scientific reasoning skills, processes that are unique to living organisms, and foundational concepts in biology and biochemistry. To do well on this part of the MCAT, you'll need to have a solid understanding of a number of different scientific disciplines, including general and organic chemistry, biochemistry, and biology.
Finally, the MCAT concludes with its section called Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior. The purpose of this section is to assess the skills that are required for practicing physicians to treat a diverse group of patients. With that goal in mind, the section features questions on mental health issues, social issues that are relevant to the practice of medicine, and questions about behavioral impact on overall health, among others. This section also consists of 59 questions and has a time limit of 95 minutes.
