To be admitted to college, you likely need to take a college admissions test such as the SAT. Most students in Minnesota, such as those from The Blake School and Minnetonka Senior High School, want to get a high score on the SAT to increase their chances of studying at the college or university of their choice.
But first thing first. Before we dig deeper into this test, we must answer the question, "What is the SAT?" The SAT tests your skills in writing, reading, and math. It also features an optional essay. Usually taken by high school juniors or seniors, the SAT measures literacy, math, and writing skills needed for academic success in college. Some students need a little practice before taking this test. Thankfully, there are many different resources available to help students with Minneapolis SAT prep.
What does Minneapolis SAT prep cover?
The SAT is composed of four sections: Writing and Language, Reading, Math (no calculator), and Math (calculator allowed). Additionally, a test taker may write an Essay (optional) which, in that case, will be the fifth test section. The total time allowed for the four sections is three hours, plus an additional 50 minutes if you will take the optional essay. There is no penalty for wrong answers. Scores will be based on the number of questions that are answered correctly. If taken, the essay will be scored separately.
The Writing and Language Test consists of 44 multiple-choice questions with a time limit of 35 minutes. This section involves the following: improving word choice, analyzing topics in science and social studies, improving organizational quality, and fixing sentence structure, word usage, and punctuation. The questions are based on passages which may be accompanied by graphs, tables, and charts. You will be asked to read the passages, find mistakes, and suggest corrections or improvements. Reading passages range from topic arguments to non-fiction narratives.
The Reading section is made up of 52 questions with a time limit of 65 minutes. The questions are multiple-choice and are based on reading passages. Graphs, charts, and tables may accompany some passages, but math skills are not required to correctly answer the questions in this section. There are five passages on this test with 10 to 11 questions per passage. SAT reading passages cover history, social studies, and science. The Reading Test includes one passage from U.S. or world literature, one passage from a U.S. founding document or related text, one passage about social science (sociology, economics, psychology, or related areas), and two passages about science (chemistry, physics, biology, or Earth science).
The Math portion is divided into two sections: no calculator and calculator. The no calculator section is composed of 15 multiple-choice questions and 5 grid-ins. Meanwhile, the calculator section consists of 30 multiple-choice questions and 8 grid-ins. It is recommended that you use a scientific calculator for this particular section. Mobile phone and smartphone calculators, calculators with QWERTY keyboards, laptops/portable computers, and calculators that can access the internet are not allowed.
You have 25 minutes to finish the no calculator section, and 55 minutes to finish the calculator section for a total of 80 minutes. The multiple-choice questions have four options, while the grid-in questions will require you to provide an answer.
If you choose to take the Essay, it should be written clearly and the flow should be smooth. You also need to have a good command of English grammar.
What are the benefits of Minneapolis SAT prep?
An SAT review can help students gain a better understanding of particular subjects, develop study skills, and grow more confident in their abilities. SAT test preparation can be undertaken in two different forms: courses and private tutoring. Let's talk about how each one could make your review easier and more efficient.
With a Minneapolis SAT prep course, you and other students will join an instructor in a collaborative, online space. These collaborative lessons will deepen your understanding and enable you to fully prepare for the SAT. When you sign up, you will have the freedom to choose between a two-week course and a four-week course. Through the live virtual platform, you can see, hear, and interact with your instructor as if they were in front of you. If you need extra help, you can have one-on-one time with the instructor to work on specific areas. Along with your time spent studying in expert-led classes, you may get assignments with practice problems to help you learn more effectively.
If you prefer a customized, more personal approach, you can work with an SAT tutor instead. We have a rigorous interviewing and vetting process to ensure that tutors are good communicators and qualified. You can receive personally tailored lessons from an experienced mentor in a one-on-one setting. We can connect you with in-home and online tutoring that can accommodate a flexible schedule and your choice of location. ...be. My years of teaching experience have helped prepare me with two important abilities: seeing language arts as a means to develop students' awareness and ability to communicate more effectively, and a greater appreciation for the individual student through balanced and effective classroom teaching and management. I teach because I have a passion for teaching, but mostly, because I care about reaching and inspiring each student from a wide array of backgrounds and abilities.... Being a teacher means going through a personal evolution of a sorts. The process is an ongoing reflection of what works, what doesn't work, and the continual realization that it is, indeed, a never-ending process. Where that may give a beginning teacher a sense of disillusionment, and maybe even despair, it's also one of the greater motivators after one teaches for a number of years. As well, within this motivation is also a recognition, the understanding of how change can make your role improve, but how intrinsic abilities can also be defined and strengthened. I believe that I have been given a love for students and a strong faith in them and in their ability to overcome anything to grow, learn, and develop. In my early years, so much energy was put into shaping curriculum, and that certainly has its benefits. In later years, so much energy has gone into shaping learning through both formative and summative assessments that show evidence of students meeting very strong, attainable learning goals in the English curriculum, and there is great benefit in these skills as well. It has been in the years in between that my real strengths have been developed, and those strengths are in developing communication skills that have enable me to connect, support, inspire, guide, mentor, and coach students from a wide array of backgrounds. Being a white dad who adopted trans-racially certainly didn't hurt my understanding and development, but I do know that my ability to care about students and see into their world, understand their culture, and truly care about them and their world, is probably the most defining and important step I have taken. Students know I care. I believe that a teacher needs to be able to know their content, build their lessons in community with their colleagues, but no single task has produced more results for me than my care for my students. Yes, a wonderful lesson plan, a continued and consistent series of lessons in a unit and a yearlong plan of powerful learning opportunities is so very important. But caring is a contagious thing. Promote it through modeling, and you might see how students grow in their caring for themselves, their learning community, their future.
