The SAT is a standardized college admission exam that is most commonly taken by 11th or 12th graders. If you attend a local school such as the Wellington School or Dublin Jerome High School, you may be preparing to take the SAT as you read this. Whether the exam is coming soon or is further ahead, taking the time to prepare well can make a difference for your future.

What subjects am I able to review during Columbus SAT prep?

There are three mandatory sections of the SAT and one optional section. The mandatory sections are Math, Reading, and Writing and Language. The optional section is the Essay portion. The required portions of the exam are scored from 200 to 800, and the Reading section and Writing and Language section share a score. The scores for the mandatory sections are combined into a single composite score that ranges from 400 to 1600. The Essay section is scored from 6 to 24 and this score is not factored into the composite score. The SAT takes three hours to complete if you only do the required sections. If you take the Essay section, you will have an additional 50 minutes.

During the Math section, you will encounter multiple-choice problems that require you to demonstrate your understanding of problem-solving and functional math skills. There are 58 questions, some of which allow you to use a calculator and some of which do not. During the 80 minutes of this exam, you must be able to accurately work with functions and expressions, read and interpret graphs, and understand key mathematical relationships.

The Reading section of the SAT has 52 questions, and you will have 65 minutes to complete the section. You must answer multiple-choice questions about a number of passages that the exam provides. You must be able to comprehend the readings effectively and evaluate the arguments used by the authors. Your understanding of context, word meanings, and logical reasoning will help you in this section.

In the Writing and Language section, you must work through questions that are based on passages that the test presents to you. You must evaluate evidence in the form of graphs as well. These questions will test your ability to improve the passages by replacing ineffective or imprecise wording with more effective phrasing. You must have a thorough knowledge of English language conventions, including grammar, usage, and punctuation. There are 44 questions in this section that you will have 35 minutes to complete.

In the Essay section, you will respond to a single prompt with an essay of your own. You will have 50 minutes to complete your work. You will encounter a piece that you must read and evaluate. You do not need to say whether you agree with the author's argument, but your piece must show which parts of the author's argument are effective and which are not. In evaluating the author's point, you need to use evidence from the original piece as well as your own argument. This section will demonstrate your understanding of effective argumentation, use of evidence, and the quality of your writing.
