If you are looking for a way to get started with your New York City GMAT prep, get in touch with Varsity Tutors. You can be connected with a group prep class or with a private mentor who can study with you one-on-one. Students in New York City who are applying for business schools in the Big Apple such as the City University of New York - Baruch College - Zicklin School of Business have a lot to gain by preparing for the GMAT with the help of a professional.
Your scores on the GMAT can have a big impact on your future educational opportunities. Schools in and around New York City such as Columbia Business School at Columbia University want to know that you are serious about your studies, and taking the GMAT can show them that. In addition, your scores on the GMAT will be taken into consideration when your application is being reviewed, and they can be a significant factor in whether you get accepted to the school of your choice or not.
What should I study when preparing for the GMAT?
There will be four sections on your GMAT. During your classes or private mentoring sessions, you should prepare for all four of these sections as they all have scores that will be looked at by admission boards at business schools. These four sections can be taken in a total of three different sequences. Keep in mind that the following sequence is only one of three possible orders.
The first section on our list is the Analytical Writing Assessment. You will be tested on your writing skills and your ability to craft a comprehensive essay. Your essay should contain compelling arguments. These arguments should be presented in a manner that makes them easy to understand. They should be organized. You should also be able to back up your arguments with supporting evidence or details. You will have 30 minutes for this section.
The next section is the Integrated Reasoning section. This section focuses on a number of areas. One area is your ability to understand and synthesize information that is presented in the form of graphics, charts, or tables. You may be asked questions based on tables and charts, and it will be up to you to interpret the data correctly so that you can come to the right decision as to what the correct answer is. You will also be tested on your ability to put together data from different sources of information. You may be required to do an analysis that has more than one part or involves information from more than one source.
Next comes the Quantitative Reasoning section. Here, you will be tested on a few skills, such as your problem-solving abilities. You will also be tested on how well you can understand data and use it to solve problems. Given different statements or data points, you will be expected to choose the correct answers to complex problems.
Finally, the fourth section on the test will be the Verbal Reasoning section. Again, a few skills will be measured in this section. One will be your reading comprehension skills. When presented with arguments, statements, and information, how well will you be able to comprehend them and provide your own counter arguments? You will also be tested on how well you understand sentence and paragraph structure. Some questions will require you to make changes to sentences and paragraphs so that they are correct.
What is the best type of New York City GMAT prep for me?
There are two kinds of New York City test preparation available for you. First of all, there is the option of taking a New York City GMAT prep course. This can be either a two-week course or a four-week course; the choice is yours and will depend on your needs and your schedule.
A New York City GMAT prep class is a great way to fit classes into your schedule. These are virtual classes, which means that they are done online under the instruction of an educated professional. You will be attending these virtual classes with other students, who will also be logging in from wherever they are. Traffic in New York City can be hectic at times, and commuting to a class can take up a large chunk of time - time that you may not have. This is especially true if you are a student and are burdened with other responsibilities at school. It is also true if you are a busy professional and you are taking the GMAT because you want to return to school in order to improve your career opportunities. You can attend these virtual classes from the comfort of your own home.
Not only do you get the benefit of flexibility, but you can also interact with the instructor as well as with the other students. You can all give each other test-taking tips. The instructor may be able to spend some time helping the class prepare for the test by giving other important test-taking strategies that will help you not only on the GMAT but on any future test that you may take.
Another option is getting help from a New York City GMAT tutor. A private tutor can help you meet your specific needs. If you feel that you will need more help preparing for the Analytical Writing Assessment, for example, private mentoring is perfect for you. A private instructor will be able to work with you and help you develop your critical writing skills so that you can increase your skills in presenting arguments in a well-crafted essay.
Of course, you can get both private mentoring and enroll in a class, too.
How can I get started with my New York City GMAT prep?
Getting started with your GMAT preparation could not be easier. As mentioned, there are many options available to you. It is best to start early and not delay. In order to get started with your New York City GMAT preparation, get in touch with Varsity Tutors as soon as possible.

...to teach, mostly because of the impact of great teachers throughout my academic career. I think learning can be really fun, if teachers think outside the box and really challenge themselves to find novel ways of conveying concepts to students. Tried and true methods are always great in the classroom, but to work one-on-one with students requires a different approach. It's also critical that learning be something students want, not grudgingly sit through, so that...

When I was in 8th grade, I was struggling with pre-algebra (I couldn't seem to wrap my head around distance/rate/time problems). I found myself loathing a class I had once loved. I started working with a tutor and going from barely getting by to being successful in that class was a very fulfilling feeling that I hope to continue to pass on to others.... The best teachers are always trying to learn as well.... Get to know his/her likes and dislikes, and identify where they are strong to build up confidence. Create a friendly and casual atmosphere.

I don't believe in memorizing facts and figures, but rather helping students learn that they can develop their problem-solving skills to approach anything with a strong mindset. Besides spending time tutoring, I love to play squash and go running. I also really enjoy photography and eating. In general, I love staying active!... I believe the best way to teach is through your own discovery. I think students should have a nibble to chew on to find their own way based on that. That's when the best true learning happens.
