Varsity Tutors can provide connections to New York City GRE preparation like collaborative online classes and private tutoring. There is much to gain from New York City GRE prep options. The Graduate Record Examinations, or GRE, is a crucial step for many students who plan on applying to grad school. Whether you apply to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Columbia University or a master's program in fine arts, business, or law at New York University, admissions departments will look closely at how you perform on each section of the exam. Reaching for your goals on the GRE can therefore have a drastic impact on your academic and professional career.
Test prep involves a different approach than studying alone. An interactive class can help uncover opportunities you didn't know were standing in the way of your goals. It can provide a refresher or teach test-taking strategies that may help improve your pacing, ability to answer tough questions, and confidence. Varsity Tutors can set you up with different types of New York City GRE prep, depending on your preferences and how you learn best. Before getting into the specifics of each, here is a breakdown of what your test prep might cover.
What Topics Are Covered by a New York City GRE Prep Program?
A course instructor or private tutor can concentrate on many subjects and concepts. The GRE consists of three main sections: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. These same areas of aptitude are measured no matter where the test is taken or which college or university is viewing your score. The GRE is administered in over 160 countries, and thousands of higher education institutions accept it. The exam is 3 hours and 45 minutes long,
In the Analytical Writing section, you have an hour to provide two responses. The tasks are to analyze an issue in 30 minutes, and then analyze an argument in the same amount of time. Skills assessed include your ability to articulate complex ideas; provide supporting examples, evidence, and reasoning; and demonstrate your command of written English. All the while, you must assess the task, plan and write your response, and check it over in the allotted time.
The Verbal Reasoning section focuses on reading comprehension, text completion, and sentence equivalence questions given over the course of one hour. Passages from one to several paragraphs long make up the reading comprehension component, which may include about 10 passages with one to six questions each. The text completion questions require you to fill in blank sections of passages, choosing from three to five options. For the sentence equivalence portion, you will have to choose from six choices per blank area of a sentence. To perform well in the Verbal Reasoning section, you'll need a solid understanding of words and sentences and be able to analyze text, interpret meaning and reason, and reach conclusions using partial information.
Mathematical skills are also tested on the GRE. The Quantitative Reasoning section measures your ability to understand concepts in arithmetic and algebra as well as geometry and data analysis. Problem-solving is a critical part of this section, as is using logical reasoning. The questions aren't only multiple choice. You will also have to answer quantitative comparison and numeric entry questions that don't provide clues to the right responses.
Unscored components of the GRE are typically included and may be in the form of an unidentified Experimental section or a marked Research section. The Experimental section is embedded within the Verbal or Quantitative Reasoning sections of the exam. These questions must be answered. The Research section may be used as well. This section is identified so you know which questions it comprises, and it is optional.
How Can Different Types of New York City GRE Prep Help Me?
Varsity Tutors can set you up with New York City GRE prep that involves participating in an online class or working with a private instructor. Both can help you review past subjects and practice for the exam. Some students choose one over the other, while others combine both. A New York City GRE prep course affords the opportunity to collaborate with a qualified instructor, and see, hear, and interact with the whole class once you're logged in. A live virtual platform enables your instructor to lead the course and work with students in applying various test prep resources. Courses cover the content that will be on the GRE, of course, but in addition, they could also cover test-taking strategies and study skills that can help you reach for your goals.
Also, you're not limited to classroom learning. If you do not understand something or have a question that has not been answered, you can request a one-on-one session. Instructors are willing to set aside this time to make sure you are benefiting from the program.
Scheduling flexibility is one major benefit that both prep methods share, and you'll find this whether you work individually with a private instructor or take part in a two- or four-week group class.
If you prefer to work with a New York City GRE tutor, Varsity Tutors can introduce you to a private instructor experienced in helping students study for the GRE. Your mentor can quickly assess your strengths and areas of opportunity to craft customized lessons to help you build a better understanding of subjects and prepare for the exam. They can use practice tests and other study aids to measure your progress and boost your confidence ahead of test day.

...level of knowledge among the public. As a recent student myself, I understand how the pressures of school can sometimes work against your innate curiosity. As a tutor, my goal is of course to help you maximize your success in school and standardized tests. But it's also (again, hopefully) to make room for curiosity, and to remind students, at least a little bit, about what can be fun about learning new things.... Every student can learn a concept - it's up to me to find the best way to communicate and teach it, so that you can learn and use it.
