Varsity Tutors offers a New York City MCAT course that can help you reach for your goals on the exam. The MCAT is one of the key requirements when applying for medical school, and some schools put a heavy weight on your test score when deciding on your application. That's why you need to prepare for it as thoroughly as possible so you can perform at your best on test day.
The MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) is a multiple-choice, computer-based test that provides a way for medical schools like The New York University School of Medicine, Weill Cornell Medical College, and Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons to measure an applicant's qualifications and readiness to do med school work. It has a reputation for being one of the most challenging standardized tests as test-takers need to sit for 7 and a half hours for the exam. Overall, the MCAT tests a person's understanding of concepts that medical school faculty, residents, and students deem important to a prospective student's success.
Most medical schools in the United States and Canada will require your MCAT score together with other documents for your application, but a New York City MCAT class can help you cover the material on the test effectively. Let's take a quick look at the content of the exam.
What could a New York City MCAT course help me review?
There are four integrated sections on the MCAT, which means the subjects are not tested independently but overlap with different areas of concentration.
1. Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems
2. Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills
3. Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems
4. Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior
Your MCAT score will include your total for each section and one total score. Each of the four sections is scored from 118-132. These scores are combined to create a total score, which ranges from 472-528.
The Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems has 59 questions that test you on your knowledge of basic biological sciences and physical sciences. The subjects covered include basic biochemistry, organic chemistry, general chemistry, biology, and physics. You will have access to the periodic table during the actual exam and have 95 minutes to finish the section.
The Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills section has 53 questions, which will all be based on passages that cover general topics in the humanities and the social sciences. This section is similar to reading comprehension sections in other standardized exams and everything you need to answer the questions in this section will be on the passages. Basically, this section tests you on your ability to analyze arguments and identify underlying assumptions and conclusions. You will have 90 minutes to answer this part of the test.
The Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems section has 59 questions that test you on your knowledge of biology and biochemistry. It covers the subjects of basic biology, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and biochemistry. To do well in this section, you need to understand the different life processes such as reproduction, movement, and growth, and how living organisms accomplish these processes. You will have 95 minutes to complete this section.
The Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior also has 59 questions that test you on sociology and psychology in the context of biological sciences. These questions are the newest ones included in the MCAT reflecting the importance of understanding how biological factors influence reactions and perceptions; behavior changes; cultural and social differences, and well-being. You will have 95 minutes to finish this section.

Collaborative study groups have been shown to help students get new perspectives on a topic, which can help them learn it more thoroughly.
We also take into consideration the busy schedules of students and make our MCAT course schedule flexible. You can choose from a two-week or four-week course, and we offer multiple sections throughout the day. New sections start every week to better accommodate students. Every element of your MCAT course is designed to help you study smarter and accomplish more in a shorter time.
