Varsity Tutors can help you find qualified, thorough Pittsburgh GRE preparation. Whether you are planning to apply for graduate school or law school, you may need to take the GRE. The score for this exam is one of the factors graduate schools look at when making the decision to accept you into their program. This exam is a dependable indicator of how well you will do in the classroom, so it is important to study.
The GRE is made up of three sections, and it will be just one of the challenges you will face as you prepare to enter graduate schools such as the University of Pittsburgh or Chatham University. If you're a working professional or a student who is thinking about getting some extra help, you can get help with your review by either taking a Pittsburgh GRE prep course or getting a Pittsburgh GRE tutor. Whichever type of review you prefer, Varsity Tutors is ready to help you find the resource that works best for you.
What does Pittsburgh GRE prep cover?
The GRE consists of three different sections, which include Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. It is given in more than 160 countries around the world and is accepted by many universities and colleges. The exam lasts nearly four hours and is computer-based in most of the world. Let's take a closer look at what the GRE entails so you have a better idea of what to expect on exam day.
The Analytical Writing section is two tasks, with a 30-minute time limit for each task. For one task you will look at an issue, and for the other task you will look at an argument. Strategies you can use on this part of the exam include assessing the directions and the task you are answering to plan and write your answer. If you have any time left, you can go over your answer to check for clarity and errors. The skills measured on this part of the test include an understanding of written English, being able to write about concepts in a clear and effective way, and how well you support your answer with examples. Other skills measured are your ability to look at claims based on evidence and maintain a coherent discussion.
The next section is Verbal Reasoning. This part of the GRE has three types of questions, including text completion, sentence equivalence, and reading comprehension. It lasts 60 minutes. The text completion part of this section involves being able to choose the best answer for blank parts of short passages. You will choose one response from a choice of three to five options for each blank. The sentence equivalence part of this section focuses on using partial information and being able to complete the sentence. You will have six choices for each blank, and you will choose two answers. The reading comprehension part of this section asks you to read a passage and show how well you understand it. You will be tested on ten passages, which can vary in length from one paragraph to several paragraphs. You will have between one to six questions for each passage. The skills assessed in this portion include summarizing a passage, interpreting meaning from context, understanding the meaning of words and sentences, looking at a text and finding a conclusion, and evaluating a passage.
The final part of the exam is the Quantitative Reasoning section. This part of the GRE has multiple-choice questions (which may have more than one answer), numeric entry, and quantitative comparison. This section lasts a little over an hour. It covers the areas of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis. The Quantitative Reasoning section measures your skills in the areas of math concepts, your ability to use problem-solving skills and logical reasoning to solve problems of using quantitative methods, and your basic math skills.
The GRE does have two other sections: an Experimental section and a Research section. Both are unscored. These sections are test questions being tried out for possible use on future editions of the GRE. The Experimental section is within either the Verbal or Quantitative Reasoning sections, so you may not even realize what questions they are. The Research section is optional and may take the place of the Experimental section. It comes at the end of the test.
How will Pittsburgh GRE prep help me prepare?
Varsity Tutors can help you connect with two ways to review for the GRE. You can choose between prep courses or private tutoring. Each option has its own benefits. Sometimes, students can benefit from doing a combination of both options. Let's discuss how Pittsburgh GRE tutoring or a prep course could help with your test review.
If you are someone who prefers one-on-one interaction, a Pittsburgh GRE tutor is a good option. Working with a private instructor gives you plenty of opportunities to ask questions and get the answers you need. The instructor is focused on your goals only. When you connect with an academic mentor, they can get to know your strengths, challenges, and learning styles in a much deeper way. The instructor can make a plan based on what you need. For example, if you struggle with analyzing reading passages, your instructor can show you techniques to help you organize your thoughts. Perhaps you don't understand a math concept. Your private instructor can show you a step-by-step way to solve those types of math problems.
If you are someone who prefers more interaction, a Pittsburgh GRE prep class is another option. This class takes place on our Live Learning Platform and allows you to interact with other students and your instructor. You work in a collaborative environment where you can ask questions and discuss the answers with other students. New classes start every week, so it is easy to fit prep into your schedule.

As an experienced tutor, I am confident in my ability to help students improve their understanding of literature, their writing, and their standardized test scores.... My teaching philosophy focuses on the importance of adopting multiple teaching strategies. An innovative, flexible approach allows me to help a wide variety of students.... In a typical first session, I talk with a student to evaluate her goals, her areas of concern, and her personal strengths.... My students become independent learners because I help guide them on strategies for helping themselves. I never do the work for my students. Instead, I guide them through their work in order to teach them how to complete future work on their own.
