If you're ready to invest in Salt Lake City ACT prep and take your study skills to the next level, Varsity Tutors can provide what you're looking for. The ACT is one of the two most popular college entrance exams in the United States, accepted by nearly every institution of higher learning with a standardized testing requirement. Students at local schools such as Judge Memorial Catholic High School and Skyline High School tend to take it during their junior year so that they can try again if they aren't satisfied with their grade. The ACT covers most of the material you have studied over your high school career, giving it a depth that may feel overwhelming to study for on your own.
Thankfully, you don't need to. We can find you either a comprehensive Salt Lake City ACT prep course or a private tutor to help you reach for educational success. In a private course, you can study with dedicated students in a collaborative learning environment designed to help everybody work toward their potential. With a private instructor, you are free to concentrate on your unique areas of opportunity to increase your study efficiency.
What topics can I cover in my Salt Lake City ACT preparation?
The ACT is a traditional pencil-and-paper exam that lasts two hours and 55 minutes (three hours and 35 minutes for the ACT Plus Writing), not including breaks. It consists of four mandatory multiple-choice sections (Math, Reading, English, Science) that are each scored on a scale from 1-36. The optional Writing section is scored on a scale from 2-12, and may not be optional for you depending on the colleges you plan to apply to. Here's a closer look at the topics covered on each section of the test:
Math
The exam's Math section includes everything covered in math class in grades 8-11: pre-algebra, coordinate geometry, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, plane geometry, and trigonometry. You need to know how to work with algebraic expressions, probability and statistics, and geometric theorems in order to answer the questions on this section. You are allowed to use approved calculators on all portions of this section, and certain items require the use of a TI-83 graphing calculator or equivalent. Students have 60 minutes to answer 60 questions on this section.
Reading
The test's Reading section measures your reading comprehension at a 12th grade level. You're expected to be able to identify main ideas and supporting details, understand relationships, infer information based on what you read, summarize information, and place potentially unfamiliar words into proper context. You also need to be able to explain the difference between fact and opinion. You have 35 minutes to answer 40 items on this section.
English
The assessment's English section measures your command of English language conventions such as grammar and punctuation. The questions are again passage-based, with an emphasis on tone, style, topic development, organization, and cohesion. You have only 45 minutes to answer 75 questions, so time management is every bit as important as your academic knowledge.
Science
The ACT's Science section covers concepts you have studied in your science classes: space sciences, biology, chemistry, and physics. You're expected to have a firm grasp on how to apply the scientific method and interpret the data produced by an experiment. This section primarily measures your critical reasoning, interpretation, and problem-solving skills. You have 35 minutes to answer 40 questions.
Writing
The test's essay prompt presents test-takers with a controversial issue and three perspectives on it. Students are asked to compose an argumentative essay about their own perspective on the topic, incorporating at least one of the perspectives provided into their analysis. This section assesses a test-taker's argumentation and written communication skills. You have a total of 40 minutes to write your response.
What are the benefits of each Salt Lake City ACT prep product Varsity Tutors offers?
As noted above, we can help students connect with either a Salt Lake City ACT prep class or a private Salt Lake City ACT tutor. If you select a class, you'll study with a knowledgeable instructor and several other students over two or four weeks. Our live virtual platform facilitates real-time interactions, so asking for help is as easy as raising your hand. You can also reach out to your fellow students to foster a collaborative learning environment where everyone can help everybody else. There is no penalty for guessing on the ACT, so you might swap strategies for eliminating incorrect answer choices when you're feeling stumped.
Working with other students also allows you to split the cost of the class, helping everybody get a great value for their money. If you feel like you still need some personalized attention to grasp an especially tricky concept, you have the right to schedule private study time with your teacher. We vet every instructor we work with, so you can count on learning from a great communicator who knows everything about the ACT.
If you would rather work with a private tutor, our Live Learning Platform uses powerful features such as a virtual whiteboard to facilitate face-to-face sessions without the logistical nightmare of trying to meet in person. Your instructor can also adapt their teaching methods to your preferred learning style, helping to improve your study efficiency. Perhaps most importantly, your instructor can help you study at your preferred pace.
For example, let's say that you're great with numbers but could express yourself more effectively in an essay format. Your instructor can gloss over the Math and Science sections because you're already prepared for them. Instead, that time can be used to practice your outlining skills to make your essay feel a little bit more approachable. You might also complete entire practice exams to help you get a sense of what you can expect on the actual test.

...tidbits or whole subjects in the classroom, and it can quickly feel like it is too late to catch up. My goal is to work together to pick up the pieces that were lost or are close, but not quite there: learning the way you want to learn and the way you learn best rather than having topics taught at you. For standardized testing: I have taken the special classes and labored through the workbooks...

My primary goal is to help students become independent, comfortable, and confident in the fields they are studying. I love helping people get to the "aha" moment when they really understand what's being taught. In my experience, one of the most important parts of tutoring is setting clear expectations at the beginning and working toward a common goal. Given the right goals and assistance, I truly believe that anyone can master any of the subjects...

I have a PhD in Biomedical Engineering. I am starting a part-time lecturer position at Paul Quinn College in the fall for General Biology I lab and lecture. I love to learn and teach. I read books, play board games, and do puzzles in my free time. ... I would find out what interests the student and try to find a way to incorporate that into the lessons, so that the student wants to learn.... Try to break down that skill or concept into skills or concepts that the student already knows.

...a lot of explanation. In most things, I'm not that guy! Like many students, understanding comes with repetition of principles and hard work. I have the perspective of a student trying to understand, not a teacher trying to preach. I love working with people from the ground up; we start at the comfort zone and work our way to improvement. I know I don't know everything, so I'm excited to learn as well!... Start where you are and work up from there.
