What topics can I review as part of my San Diego LSAT prep?
The LSAT is a digital test that is taken primarily on a tablet provided by the testing center. The testing tablet offers some useful features, including a five-minute warning when you are running out of time, flagging functionality to help you go back and review previous questions, and the option to highlight text. You take a total of three multiple-choice questions on the tablet: Reading Comprehension, Analytical Reasoning, and Logical Reasoning. In addition, you take an unscored Writing section during a separate testing session that is provided to each school you apply to as a writing sample. Here is a closer look at what you can expect on each section:
Reading Comprehension
The Reading Comprehension section places an emphasis on long-form, complex content that lawyers work with every day. You are expected to be able to identify a passage's purpose or main idea, make inferences based on the material stated, define unfamiliar words and phrases using context, and identify the impact of a piece's tone and structure on its overall message.
Analytical Reasoning
The Analytical Reasoning section is all about understanding a structure of relationships and drawing valid conclusions about them. Some of the topics covered include reasoning with conditional statements, inferring what could or must be true based on provided information, and recognizing logically equivalent statements.
Logical Reasoning
The Logical Reasoning section centers on analyzing, critically-evaluating, and completing arguments. You may work with material drawn from newspapers, magazines, scholarly articles, advertisements, and informal discourse. Skills measured include reasoning by analogy, drawing valid conclusions, recognizing points of disagreement, identifying flaws in a case, and identifying how new evidence could change a position. Notably, there are two Logical Reasoning sections on every LSAT vs. one of everything else.
Writing
The Writing section presents you with a decision problem and two possible decisions or courses of action. You select one of them and compose an argumentative essay defending your choice. There are no right or wrong answers on this section, as law schools are looking at your composition's clarity, reasoning, language, organization, and command of writing mechanics in evaluating your work. You have one calendar year from completing the rest of the examination to take this portion.
Every LSAT section lasts 35 minutes, and there is no penalty for guessing. Your final LSAT score is reported on a scale from 120-180, with higher numbers indicating a stronger performance.
What are some of the advantages of each of the San Diego LSAT preparation options Varsity Tutors provides?
As noted above, we can help you prepare for the LSAT with two great options. If you enroll in a San Diego LSAT prep class, you'll study on a live virtual platform with a knowledgeable teacher and several other students preparing for the exam. Your class will meet on a weekly basis, and you can arrange private study time with your teacher outside of class time to go over anything you need help with. Our class offerings are available in two and four-week durations to make it easier to find a fit for your schedule, and we start new classes every week so that it's always a great time to jump in.
Many students are also surprised by how much they like working with other students. You can interact with your peers freely, allowing you to exchange test-taking tips and strategies while your instructor is working with somebody else. You may also complete group assignments that open your eyes to a completely different way of approaching a problem. For example, reviewing an outline on the opposite side of the decision problem can help you develop a fuller understanding of the scenario presented. The fact that you can also split the cost of expert instruction with your classmates is also nice.
That said, some students prefer to study in a learning environment built around their needs. There are no set curricula with private instruction, allowing your tutor to design sessions around your unique pacing needs. If you already understand truth statements, you can concentrate on other areas to improve your study efficiency. Similarly, your instructor can difficult concepts in different ways until it clicks for you, flexibility that you might not find in a traditional classroom setting. Most importantly, all study sessions take place on our convenient Live Learning Platform so that you don't need to worry about the hassle of a commute.
Many students also take practice exams under realistic conditions with their tutor to get a sense of what to expect on test day. You have probably never taken a tablet-based test before, so practice exams can help you feel more comfortable tapping your answers instead of filling in or clicking on a bubble. You can also review the results with your instructor to identify your academic strengths and any areas of opportunity that could benefit from further study.

I tutor the LSAT because I know it's a hard test and I know what it's like to struggle with it. However I also understand the process necessary to produce better scores, and nothing is more satisfying to me than helping someone achieve what seemed impossible a few months ago.... Your score is a product of so many factors--your understanding of the material, your speed, even how accurately you bubble answers--but in the end it all comes down to whether you studied the test from every angle and put in the time necessary to get the results you want.

Plus, it's rewarding to see my students' scores improve, which is almost guaranteed with the right kind of practice....
