If you're a prospective law student hoping to gain entrance to a law school such as The University of Chicago Law School or Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, Varsity Tutors can set you up with excellent Chicago LSAT prep opportunities. The LSAT, also known as the Law School Admissions Test, was created to evaluate the exact skills necessary to succeed in law school courses. The LSAT is the only standardized exam accepted by all ABA-accredited law schools and Canadian common-law law schools. This exam is a critical step in the process of earning admission to the law program of your choice so you'll want to do everything you can to effectively prepare for test day. Signing up for Chicago LSAT prep can help you with guided practice opportunities and provide you with the right support as you review the skills necessary to do well on the LSAT.
What can a Chicago LSAT prep course cover?
The LSAT is comprised of five 35-minute sections, all containing multiple choice questions. The different sections include Reading Comprehension, Analytical Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and one unscored section. The unscored section of the exam, also known as the variable section, is used to experiment with new question formats or different test forms. The placement of this section varies, so you won't know which section is the variable section until you get your official scores. Let's take a closer look at the section, starting with the unscored Writing assessment.
You will have 35-minutes to complete your essay for the Writing assessment of the LSAT. Although this section isn't scored by the LSAT administrators, your sample is sent to all law schools that you apply to. Your prospective law school will look at your essay to evaluate your reasoning skills, clarity in conveying your thoughts, and your use of proper writing mechanics. This writing sample will provide you with a problem and you will be asked to choose between two positions or courses of action and defend your viewpoint. This is not a test on picking the "right" answer but rather an opportunity for you to demonstrate your logical and argumentative writing skills. You'll want to provide sound examples and evidence to back up your ideas. This is a skill you can practice with a knowledgeable LSAT mentor who can help you edit your writing for clarity and organization.
Reading Comprehension skills are assessed in a separate section, which you have 35 minutes to complete. This portion of the LSAT measures your ability to read a passage and answer questions regarding the given text. Questions can ask about the main idea of the passage, ideas that need to be inferred, the organization or structure of the passage, or the author's attitude based on your understanding of the tone of the passage. Passages here will be long-form difficult texts like the ones you will be ask to read in your law school courses. Working with an expert mentor on these types of problems can help you not only on the LSAT, but with your future law courses.
The Analytical Reasoning assessment consists of one section. Questions here can evaluate your capacity to understand relationships, their structure, and ability to draw conclusions based on this information. You'll want to practice reasoning with conditional statements, drawing conclusions based on provided facts and rules, and recognition of two statements containing logically-equivalent context.
The Logical Reasoning assessment is split into two separate 35-minute sections and measures your ability to analyze, critique, evaluate, and complete various arguments. You'll have the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to recognize parts of an argument and assess their relationship. You'll also need to be able to reason using analogies as well as identify flaws in an argument. These are skills you will use both in law school and throughout your future law career so you'll want to make sure to practice these concepts. A LSAT prep class or instructor can help you hone these skills so you can move through this section with ease and confidence.
No matter which of these skills you would like to improve, Varsity Tutors is here to support you as you prepare to work towards your academic and professional goals.
What are the benefits of different types of Chicago LSAT prep?
When you choose varsity Tutors for your LSAT review, you'll have the opportunity to take advantage of two different prep options: an online collaborative class or private instruction from an expert LSAT coach. Let's take a closer look at the benefits of either option.
If you're a social learner who enjoys the structure and style of a traditional classroom, an online Chicago LSAT prep class may be the right answer for you. You'll be able to access your class sessions anywhere you can find WiFi and a computer, allowing you to attend class in your favorite cafe, the local library, or the comfort of your own home. You'll be able to interact directly with your instructor as if he or she in in the room with you. You'll also be able to engage in various group activities and discussions. This kind of collaborative lesson has been shown to help students gain a better understanding of the material. It can also help you enjoy learning and support students who feel they are struggling by providing a sense of community with other students who are dealing with the same difficult content as you.
If you prefer a more individualized approach, you can decide to sign up to work with a private Chicago LSAT tutor. This gives you the opportunity to work at your pace and focus only on the topics and skills you need to improve. I tutor the LSAT because I know it's a hard test and I know what it's like to struggle with it. However I also understand the process necessary to produce better scores, and nothing is more satisfying to me than helping someone achieve what seemed impossible a few months ago.... Your score is a product of so many factors--your understanding of the material, your speed, even how accurately you bubble answers--but in the end it all comes down to whether you studied the test from every angle and put in the time necessary to get the results you want.
