Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Sona in Austin, TX
This student is a real joy to work with. Even though homework isn't his favorite thing, he's really open to suggestions and learning tricks to make studying/homework easier. Today, we went over his history homework. We worked on improving his writing through specifics. Additionally, we went over writing down words/terms/details on flashcards as they come up. Doing so makes test time easier since the cramming is less intensified. We then worked on Spanish as well. We created flashcards for conjugations as well. Finally, we worked on geography and strategies to learn maps better. As he has a test coming up in 5 weeks, we're breaking the parts of the world down into sections per week. By doing so he only has to learn a continent (and countries on it) per week.

I have asked her to watch the video this weekend so that we may write the final paper on Monday. We spent the majority of this session preparing for her essay test next Wednesday. We created outlines of the first two possible essay questions. She will work with her friends to prepare outlines for the final two possible questions. We may review this work on Monday, as well, if time permits and/or the paper is not due imminently.

Today the student and I worked on reading comprehension. She read a story and then we discussed main ideas, facts from the story, and what she took away from the story. We then worked on vocabulary and grammar correction. She did very well with all the exercises and reads very well. We finished the session by reviewing multiplication and division exercises.

Today we began with a review of the student's science notes from the week. She wrote them in an outline form during class similar to what we did in our last session. The notes were well done and show that she grasped what we discussed last week. We also reviewed for a social studies quiz on World War II. We went over her study review sheet and outlined the major battles. We discussed the battles and terminology expected on the quiz.

We worked primarily on note-taking during this session. He read for me during the week, and we went over some examples of how to take notes while reading fiction/novels, since he has to do that in school. We did some writing as well, because we want to keep improving in that area. We then looked at a nonfiction piece, and he took notes. I then had him retell the article from his notes, and we worked on taking more detailed/organized notes without taking too much more time.
