We've had the BEST experience with VT! Our tutor has helped my middle schoolers math grades come up from a D to an A for our 8th grader and from a D to a B for my 6th grader. I'm beyond pleased with how she connected with my boys.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Sona in Houston, TX
We worked on her reviewing his Spanish vocabulary - using the words in sentences and making flashcards. We also worked on his studying schedule as some of the goals she had set out to reach had not been met. We also worked on geometry terms and geometry problems - specifically formulas involving finding the volume of shapes. I love that the student asks when something doesn't make sense and shows a real enthusiasm to learn. By the end of the session she was able to notice which mistakes she was making. We also worked on a strategy to help her learn the formulas for her quiz.

Tonight, the student and I reviewed his Latin homework and discussed ways he can improve his organizational skills. Overall he's doing a good job, I just wonder if he is implementing the suggestions we discuss when our sessions are over.

The student and I finished one of his homework packets and were able to get most of the way through a second one during our session. By the end he had a good understanding of the crucial words. He was very engaged and worked hard throughout the entire lesson.

Today we studied for the student's social studies test. He needed to prepare paragraph responses to different writing prompts. We worked on the pre-writing process, and he will fill in the paragraphs later. We started by understanding the prompt. Then, we made the bones of an outline by writing the main topics and numbered how many points the teacher asked for (i.e. at least 2 reasons why such and such event was divisive). We went through one topic to fill in the bullet points, and he will work on the rest on his own. I spent the last 10 minutes quizzing him on vocabulary to make sure he could explain definitions in his own words.

The student and I went over several topics for upcoming quizzes and tests. I had him review his chemistry notes, then I asked him questions to see what he retained. We did the same type of review for US History. The student's goal for the week is to use his homework app to make sure that he is writing down all of his assignments. His area of improvement is making sure that all of his assignments are completed and turned in. Going forward I plan on looking at his schools homework site at the start of each session and then structuring our time based on what is assigned for that particular week.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Nicole in Houston, TX
The student and I went over what is she learning in each of her courses, when assignments are due, test dates, etc. After establishing an overall picture of her current coursework, she asked for help with a History assignment. We worked on creating notes from the current chapter in her text book using a guided note sheet. After completing the note sheet we classified each act (Sugar, Stamp, Proclamation Line, etc.) into a category (economic, political, social, military) to aid with an upcoming essay. The student has an outline for the upcoming essay due Thursday. We worked on the outline together. At the end of our session the outline was approx. 80% complete. She will complete the remainder on her own. We are meeting again next Tuesday.
