Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Nickolette in Mountainview, CA
Today, we worked on a 5th grade math review that included: decimals, place values, rounding and adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying decimals. Then, the student worked on math word problems. I also had him work on punctuation using periods, exclamation and question marks.

The student and I started the session by working together to complete his math homework. He was responsible for answering open ended math problems that required him to defend his thinking. He appeared to be confused in the beginning of the work session. I taught him how to read the number story and identify the facts that are given. We also practiced how to identify the question and the information that is required for solving. Once the student was able to identify these parts of the number story he found it easier to solve the number stories with my support.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Katie in Mountainview, CA
First, I helped the student complete her social studies homework regarding regions of the U.S. We used a globe to help her visualize the areas and determine the correct answers for her worksheet. Next we worked on writing the conclusion/results portion of her science research project. We discussed transition words that were appropriate when writing this type of paragraph. We also discussed the results of her experiment in terms of how to draw conclusions from her bar graph. Though she said her hypothesis was proven to be false based on her results, she often was stating trends in her analysis that showed the hypothesis to be true. By the end of the session, she seemed to understand the mistake she was making while writing the analysis piece of her conclusion.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Kandice in Mountainview, CA
We reviewed math and reading. In math, we worked on dividing and multiplying fractions. We worked on the student reviewing the process of flipping the number after the divisor which she was a bit confused about at first. In reading, we reviewed who, what, when, why, and where so that she can recall what she read immediately after reading and retain the information after reading. We will continue to work on synthesizing her thoughts about what has happened in the book concerning the main points. This will help her when she is working on the exam's reading comprehension portion so she can have quick recall of the text.

Study Skills and Organization Tutoring review by Abigail in Mountainview, CA
Today the student split the session between working on study skills and finishing our work on percents. We finished a lesson we started last time, on how to build a useful outline from her class work that she can use for studying. We went through an example using percents and discussed elements of a good outline. We started to apply it to her midterm studying--I assigned her to make an outline of a midterm topic, for us to review next time.
