I am a graduate of the University of Chicago, and I will be starting a graduate program at Columbia in August. I am about to complete a year of service with City Year, an education non-profit that places young adults into under-served schools. As a City Year member, I worked full-time in the classroom with middle-school students who were in approximately the 10th percentile for math (meaning they score lower than 90% of students). One-fourth of those students were able to grow around 15 percentile points by the end of the year! Hobbies: reading, cooking, gardening, music, art, nature, books, writing

I am a junior Mechanical Engineering major at Yale, and I hope to become a Naval Aviator after college. I am also a varsity sailor, and enjoy playing music with friends when I can get some free time. I have been tutoring my fellow students throughout my entire academic career, and I would best describe my tutoring style as one that adapts to each students' needs. For example, I have always tried to frame questions in a different way so that the student can better understand the question. Some students need visual representations of numbers and systems to understand them, and others benefit more by understanding the concepts behind each formula. I prefer to tutor in math and physics, and especially with real world application problems. I hope to help students improve their standardized test scores and their understanding of the math and sciences so that they can achieve their academic goals! Hobbies: art, books, running, reading, music, writing

I'm a highly creative person who works best with visual thinkers. Very recently graduated from Stanford University, I majored in Human Biology with a concentration in Bioinformatics and Stem Cell Science. Technical though my background may be, I am currently gigging as a singer/songwriter/composer in NYC and tackle even the most hard-science of problems with a top-down, big-picture, holistic approach. If you have a propensity to look at problems in a cross- or inter-disciplinary manner (or want to learn how to do so), I'm the tutor for you!

I am a recent graduate of Yale University and incoming first year medical student at Columbia University. Originally from the DC area, I have always had a passion for science and medicine and pursued a degree in Biology while at Yale. During the 2008-2009 academic year, I tutored science, math, English, history, and Mandarin Chinese part-time with a DC-based tutoring company. At Yale, I worked as a freshman counselor to provide academic and career advice to incoming freshmen. I have taken both SAT and MCAT test prep classes and am familiar with both tests as well as the preparation necessary to score well. My personal career goals include attending medical school to pursue either immunology/infectious diseases or psych/neurology, teaching biology at the university level, and working in public/global health with either the CDC or the WHO.

I am willing to address any issue with an open mind and I try to develop strategies that play to a student's strengths. I would like to think I am very approachable and personable, and I have had very positive experiences with many students in the past using this philosophy. Outside of academics, I love playing basketball and watching sports, as well as chilling with friends, listening to music, and keeping up with politics and current affairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Asynchronous development means gifted students' intellectual abilities advance faster than their social, emotional, or physical development. A 5th grader might solve advanced algebra problems but struggle with peer relationships or emotional regulation. Tutors experienced with gifted learners recognize this mismatch and tailor instruction to challenge the intellect while building confidence in areas where the student feels less mature, preventing frustration or behavioral issues that often mask actual ability.

Gifted 5th graders often set impossibly high standards and fear making mistakes, which can paralyze learning and risk-taking. Expert tutors create safe environments where mistakes are reframed as learning opportunities, help students distinguish between healthy striving and harmful perfectionism, and teach metacognitive strategies—like breaking complex problems into smaller steps—to reduce anxiety. This approach allows gifted students to embrace challenging material without the emotional toll that perfectionism creates.

Underachievement in gifted students often stems from boredom with unchallenging material, lack of executive function skills, perfectionism, or social pressure to hide their abilities. Tutors work with gifted learners to provide appropriately challenging content, teach organizational and time-management strategies specific to their learning style, and help them develop a growth mindset that values effort over innate talent. Addressing the root cause—not just the grades—is key to reigniting engagement.

Gifted 5th graders benefit from moving beyond memorization to skills like analysis, synthesis, evaluation, and creative problem-solving—often described in Bloom's Taxonomy as higher-order thinking. Tutors use Socratic questioning, open-ended projects, and real-world problem scenarios to push students to ask "why" and "what if," rather than just finding the right answer. This builds intellectual independence and prepares them for advanced coursework where depth of thinking matters more than speed.

Expert tutors for gifted students understand cognitive development, recognize signs of asynchronous development, and know how to differentiate instruction for advanced learners. They're skilled at asking probing questions, recognizing when a student is bored versus struggling, managing perfectionism and anxiety, and fostering intellectual curiosity rather than just delivering content. Experience with gifted learners—whether through formal training, teaching advanced students, or working with gifted populations—is essential to avoid generic tutoring approaches that don't serve these students' unique needs.

Some gifted students need acceleration (moving ahead in grade level or subject), while others thrive with enrichment (diving deeper into topics at their current level). Tutors can provide both: accelerating a student ready for 6th or 7th grade math while enriching their science learning with independent research projects, or vice versa. This flexibility allows students to progress at their own pace in different subjects and prevents the one-size-fits-all pacing of traditional classrooms from holding them back or boring them.

Twice-exceptional students are gifted but also have ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety, or other learning differences—and they often go unidentified because their giftedness masks their struggles or vice versa. Tutors trained in 2e learners understand how to leverage strengths while accommodating challenges, use multi-sensory approaches, build executive function skills, and help students develop self-advocacy skills. This targeted support ensures these students get appropriate challenge without being frustrated by unaddressed learning barriers.

Gifted students often feel isolated, struggle to find intellectual peers, or hide their abilities to fit in—issues that impact motivation and well-being. While tutors aren't therapists, those experienced with gifted learners recognize these challenges and create space to discuss them, normalize the gifted experience, and help students build confidence in their abilities. Some tutors also teach emotional regulation and social skills tailored to gifted development, complementing academic growth with the emotional support these students need.
