I am good at test taking, is my ability to organize information. It's a skill I use both in my academic life, as well as professionally; as a stage manager, it is often my job to take in complicated and conflicting pieces of information (the blocking, a quick change in costumes, changes in a script) and quickly organize that information so that I can convey it to someone else. I enjoy and excel at condensing and re-communicating facts or tasks, so that they become comprehensible to someone who may not understand them the first time around. Hobbies: art, books, photography, reading, music, writing

I am greatly passionate about (writing and literature), to help this student gain confidence in her learning abilities and get to a point where, instead of being discouraged, she could actually enjoy learning. I especially loved the moments when she reached a breakthrough in her understanding of a concept and was so happy that I had been able to use my knowledge to enhance her understanding and enjoyment of a topic. I tutored through out high school and continue to tutor in college as I help other students to realize their potential and achieve their goals. Hobbies: books, music, art, nature, reading, writing

I am a graduate of Oberlin College and Wesleyan University and I am currently a PhD student at Harvard University. I received my BA in English, my BM in Jazz Studies, and my MA in Ethnomusicology. My PhD research is in West African music. I have many years of experience as a tutor, beginning as a writing tutor for a college writing center, then giving private music lessons, and working as a teaching assistant for undergraduate students in music and African studies courses. I tutor in many different areas, but my passion is in working with students in writing, literature, critical reading, music, and French. In working to prepare students for standardized tests, I can offer a wide variety of strategies for vocabulary, writing, and time management. As an educator, I am particularly interested in the transitions from high school to college, and from college into the professional world. Outside of teaching, I enjoy playing and listening to music, hiking, playing soccer, and spending time outdoors.

I am a rising junior at Vanderbilt University studying chemical engineering and mathematics. Throughout high school, I tutored both individuals and groups in a variety of subjects including algebra and physics. At Vanderbilt, I've had the opportunity to teach at local Nashville elementary and middle schools as part of Vanderbilt Student Volunteers for Science. I am passionate about tutoring math and science, and even though these subjects are often considered "dry," the right teaching style can spark any student's interest. When it comes to standardized test preparation, I've found that knowing the intricacies of a test can improve a student's score just as much as knowing the subject material can. Different students learn in different ways but that kind of personal attention is difficult to provide in a classroom. With one on one tutoring sessions, any student can excel, even in the subjects he or she has the most trouble in. When I tutor a student, my first goal is to figure out the best way to teach this individual, as no single style can suit everybody. In my free time, I enjoy playing volleyball, watching football and soccer, exercising, and reading about modern science and new technology.

I'm a big Boston Celtics fan and I speak three languages. I can get you the test results you need to succeed because I went through the exams myself and performed well. The first time I took the SAT I actually wasn't satisfied with my score, so I spent 2 months working hard to get my score to where I wanted it to be. The second time I took the exam I saw a 200-point increase. Previously, I have had experience teaching the SSAT and the SAT. The student I tutored in SSAT successfully passed the exam is now attending a private high school abroad. With VarsityTutor's online learning platform, I will be able to transfer knowledge in a visual, easy-to-understand manner. I look forward to being your tutor and helping you reach your academic goals. :)

I am currently a PhD candidate at Northwestern University, studying microbiology and public health (my two biggest passions). I received my Bachelor of Science with high honors from Emory University in 2011, where I double-majored in Biology and Spanish. During my time at Emory, I studied abroad in Australia working on barrier reef and rainforest ecology, and studied in Spain mastering my Spanish language skills. I can read and write Spanish with high proficiency and have tutored Spanish speakers, and received highest scores on the AP Spanish exam with listening. My favorite academic subjects are math and science, and I have received perfect scores on a variety of standardized math exams, including SAT I math, SAT II math IIC subject test, BC calculus AP exam, and the GRE quantitative exam. In addition to tutoring mathematics at all levels, I enjoy tutoring grammar and mechanics, and editing essays. I received the Carlos C. Rojas Excellence in Writing Award from Emory University, and have served on the editorial board for Emory University's undergraduate research journal, as well as have authored peer-reviewed manuscripts at Northwestern University. I have lectured to undergraduate students at Northwestern University in cell biology, and have taught English as a Second Language (ESL) in both a classroom setting and one-on-one. I have a very diverse background of knowledge and have worked in a variety of settings, both academic and in industry, and can meet any of your tutoring needs. I am a very patient person with excellent communication and listening skills who will take the time to get to know each of my tutees. After identifying and recognizing a tutee's own strengths and weaknesses, I can tailor a unique tutoring plan to help each student exceed his or her goals. Frequently Asked Questions
9th grade marks a significant transition where students juggle multiple subjects with increased rigor, independent research expectations, and more complex essay writing across disciplines. Many students struggle with time management for the first time, balancing homework, extracurriculars, and social pressures. Additionally, the shift from concrete to abstract thinking—especially in algebra, geometry, and literature analysis—can be disorienting. Students often underestimate how much organization and note-taking skills matter, leading to gaps that compound throughout the year.
Algebra and geometry are the most common pain points, as students transition from basic arithmetic to abstract mathematical reasoning and proofs. English classes demand stronger analytical reading and essay structure skills, particularly in understanding theme, symbolism, and literary devices. Science courses like biology introduce lab reports and complex vocabulary that require both conceptual understanding and strong writing. History and social studies require synthesis of information and argumentative writing that many 9th graders haven't practiced before.
Excellent 9th grade tutors understand adolescent development and can bridge the gap between concrete and abstract thinking—they explain why concepts matter, not just how to solve problems. They should have subject expertise in the specific courses they're teaching (algebra, biology, English, etc.) and experience recognizing where misconceptions form. Strong tutors also excel at building study skills and organizational systems that serve students beyond tutoring, and they can communicate with high school teachers to align their instruction with classroom expectations and upcoming assessments.
Personalized instruction allows tutors to identify exactly where a student's understanding breaks down—whether it's foundational gaps from middle school, difficulty with new abstract concepts, or weak study habits—and address those specific gaps rather than moving forward with holes in knowledge. Tutors can teach effective note-taking, test preparation, and time management strategies tailored to how each student learns best. This targeted approach prevents the common 9th grade problem where students fall behind early and struggle to catch up, since each concept builds on the previous one.
9th grade performance significantly impacts high school GPA and transcript strength for college applications, making this year a critical foundation. Many states administer end-of-course exams in algebra, biology, and English that affect both grades and graduation requirements. Additionally, some schools use 9th grade performance to place students in honors or AP tracks for subsequent years, so strong performance opens doors for advanced coursework. PSAT testing may also occur, giving students an early benchmark for college readiness.
Algebra requires students to think abstractly and manipulate variables instead of concrete numbers—a cognitive leap that doesn't happen naturally for all 9th graders at the same pace. Students often lack fluency with foundational skills like fractions, negative numbers, and order of operations, which creates confusion when these appear in algebraic expressions. Additionally, algebra demands that students understand why procedures work, not just memorize steps, and many students haven't developed this deeper reasoning yet. Personalized instruction can slow down to rebuild these foundations and explicitly teach the 'why' behind algebraic rules.
9th grade writing jumps in complexity—essays require thesis statements, textual evidence, and analytical thinking that go beyond simple five-paragraph structure. Tutors can teach the specific conventions each subject expects: literary analysis in English, lab reports in science, argumentative essays in social studies. They also help students develop a writing process that includes planning, drafting, and revision, rather than writing one draft the night before. With personalized feedback on organization, evidence integration, and clarity, students see measurable improvement in grades and confidence across all their classes.
Successful 9th graders establish consistent daily homework routines, use active study strategies like practice testing and spaced repetition rather than passive re-reading, and organize materials by subject and unit. They learn to break larger projects into smaller deadlines to avoid last-minute cramming, and they develop systems for tracking assignments and test dates. Many 9th graders also benefit from learning how to ask for help early—from teachers, tutors, or classmates—rather than waiting until they're failing. A tutor can model these habits and help students build accountability systems that stick.
