The Boerne School System

Boerne, Texas, is a suburb of San Antonio. It has a population of approximately 10,000 residents, and the greater metropolitan area has a population of almost two million people. Most of Boerne’s students attend schools within the Boerne Independent School District, which oversees around ten public schools.

No matter what stage of education your child is in, Varsity Tutors can help your student overcome any academic hurdles he or she may be facing. The guidance of a private tutor can give your child a real advantage in his or her studies.

The chart below displays how well the public high schools in Boerne have prepared their students for the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR. These tests are given to students beginning in third grade and continue until eleventh grade. High school freshmen, sophomores, and juniors take End of Course assessments in addition to the standard STAAR.

Boerne Test Scores

The STAAR measures a student’s knowledge of the curriculum taught by public schools, including reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. The End of Course assessments given to high school students focus on literature and composition, biology, physical science, algebra, geometry, United States history, and economics. In addition to these state-mandated assessments, high school students nearing graduation may also be preparing for standardized exams required for college admissions, like the ACT or SAT.

No matter if your child is preparing for the STAAR, the SAT, or simply needs more guidance in his or her classes, working with an experienced tutor in Boerne can make a noticeable difference in your child’s education. While some students are able to work through challenges in school on their own, many others appreciate a tutor’s guidance. One of the greatest benefits of tutoring is the direct interaction--something prepackaged study guides and online tutorials lack. Personal Beorne tutoring puts the focus squarely on your child’s goals.

In contrast to other high schools statewide, Boerne’s schools have an excellent student-to-teacher ratio.

Tutoring review by Jeremy in Boerne, TX
Tonight I reviewed through the student's study guide with her in preparation for Thursday's math test. We specifically covered: equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions, improper fractions and mixed #s, benchmarks, expression of fractions and mixed #s as decimals, and real world problems involving fractions. We spent some time working on equivalent fractions. She showed some struggle understanding why different fractions may or may not be equivalent, yet she is able to simplify equations. I went through a few illustrated examples of "pizzas" to best describe how 1/4 = 2/8 and how 1/2 = 2/4. After a few interactive examples, she got the grasp and verbally explained why the illustrations and fractions were equivalent. We spent some time reviewing improper fractions and mixed numbers. I reviewed through the shortcuts to calculate the mixed number or the corresponding improper fraction. She needs to take her time and not rush to her answer. Especially with fractions, when she rushes, she arrives at the wrong answer as she may divide instead of multiplying when calculating for the right common denominator. This is something we will continue to work on. The student and I discussed fractions as decimals. This seemed to give her a lot of difficulty, and I went through a few examples, similar to last lesson. I will review these problems with her prior to her test. Finally, we reviewed the real world problems. She needs help most with the language of the problem, rather than that of the math involved in the problem. After explaining the problem to her in another way, she understood what she had to do to arrive at the right answer. The student needs to take her time with these problems and not rush through as some problems contain multiple steps. I left her with all the sample problems and practice work she completed with me during the lesson. Overall she had a great lesson. she just needs to take her time with her problems, not guess, and work the problem out until she is completely satisfied with her answer. She was a pleasure to work with this evening, after a few example problems, she grew the confidence to explain the rationale behind her work.

Today we continued studying the second semester of the student's math class. She completed two more homework sections. The topic was plotting lines and slopes. She generally understood the concept, and I just corrected a few things on her homework. We went over a few concepts from the book, and then she took the section quizzes online. She did well on the quizzes. She took her midterm for the course last week and is waiting for results. She will work on two more sections for next time

The student continued to work on her summer school work. There were a few harder fraction problems that involved converting the denominators. She had only a little practice doing this last year. We also discussed study strategies, particularly regarding independent reading.

We went through her previous SAT exam and reviewed all the questions that she answered incorrectly. We discussed some testing strategies then answered the majority of the SAT Questions of the Day on the website. The student is very smart and eager to learn and improve her score. I asked her to practice SAT sections under timed conditions. Overall a very good first session!

We went over logarithms and inverse functions. The student was struggling a bit with logarithms. We reviewed them, and I encouraged him to study these concepts and memorize them so that he will be more comfortable with applying them. I encouraged him to look at some inverse equations that involved logarithms.

We studied for the student's vocabulary test in today's session. I made him a pretest, which he did very well on, and then I quizzed him on the words. He did very well, and I believe he is sufficiently prepped for his test tomorrow.
