Today we went over a review packet to prepare the student for her first exam coming up this Friday. This covered converting patterns to algebraic expressions, identifying functions as linear, quadratic or exponential and combining equations graphically with or without the help of a table. She felt uneasy about multiplying two functions when combining them, so we also covered a couple extra problems on that topic.

Tutoring review by Megan in Keller, TX
We worked on reading comprehension, which is an expressed struggle area for the student. We read several fiction and nonfiction passages. Before reading, we set a purpose and made predictions of the main idea based on the title and other text features. During reading, we paused and checked out predictions before creating a few more. At the end, we reviewed whether or not our predictions were accurate, reviewed a few vocabulary words, discussed author's purpose, and paraphrased the text in our own words. The student continues to show growth in summarization since we first began tutoring. He is more confident in identifying the main idea, and he now uses more supporting details to justify his work.

Tutoring review by Jerilynn in Keller, TX
We talked a little about how the student's recent physics test went. She felt pretty comfortable with most of the problems, and we talked about an object being pulled at an angle. We looked through some of her old algebra tests on quadratic functions. We reviewed the different forms of a quadratic function and what pieces of information each one gives. We went through solving various quadratic functions by factoring, completing the square, square rooting, and using the quadratic equation. She is doing well using the quadratic equation and square roots to solve a quadratic function, and she was doing better with factoring and completing the square once we went through a few problems.

Tutoring review by Todd in Keller, TX
On Thursday, we began by working on the homework the student had on Lewis dot structures and bond strength/length. After working through a few of the problems, he did a lot better. After we had finished his homework, we reviewed some concepts that have been difficult for him so far this year. We focused mostly on electron configuration and atomic orbitals. Again, after doing some practice, he was able to do much better. I think what will work best with him is reviewing the concepts briefly and simply and then doing practice questions to reinforce the material. He should think about other areas that have been difficult so far so that we can go over them in upcoming sessions.
