Concepts covered: p-values, confidence levels, hypothesis testing, errors in hypothesis decisions. We went over the problems she had on her homework. I received an email from the student this past week that she got a 4.0 in her Calc 1 class! She has since started Calc 2 and wants to continue working with me to get a good grade again. Her professor gave them a practice exam that was 8 questions long. The student and I worked through each of the problems together. She was actually able to do almost all of the work on her own, which I was impressed by. After going through the practice exam we talked about how she planned to keep preparing for the exam. We then made a plan for when we want to keep meeting for the rest of the quarter.

Today was an introduction and getting to know the student and his mom. We discussed what his needs are and what would be required of the state assessment test for math. We will specifically focus on problem solving, word problems and math problems that are similar to the testing format to help him. He did well on his first session.

Tutoring review by Hannah in Mecklenburg County, NC
The student and I went over the SAT practice essay that she wrote and I offered feedback on her syntax, structure, and vocabulary. I showed her the essay I wrote on the same prompt, to give her a model for some of the strategies we worked on. We also worked on sentence improvement, and based on her scores on the practice test she took yesterday, she is improving which is awesome. We then went over some critical reading questions and came up with mnemonic devices for remembering some of the grammatical rules for SAT writing.

The student and I spent our session working through her semester exam problems. The questions were comprehensive for every chapter. She was able to complete her assignment with more than a basic understanding of the material at hand. She even was able to work through the bonus problem!

In this session, the student and I continued to work on finding the slope and y-intercept of a given equation. She was having trouble at first, but after I gave her a couple of practice problems I created, she seemed to understand the material more.
