We reviewed the student's recent test over rational polynomials. He scored a B, which is higher than he had anticipated. He lost points over distribution, simplification, and algebra mistakes, all of which he recognized immediately upon review. He demonstrated his mastery of the concepts tested. The new chapter is over graphing circles. Today focused on completing the squares to write equations for circles in standard form. We defined our strategy for solving these problems and wrote a step-by-step list for reference throughout the chapter.

Tutoring review by Hayley in Medina, MN
Today we started off by going over the student's homework for tomorrow. We worked through two different methods of rotating figures; first, by using trigonometry, which she has been introduced to before, but is still getting comfortable with, and second, by using tools (protractor, compass, ruler, etc.). She became much more comfortable with trigonometric functions by the end of this practice, but I think she will need more practice to be able to apply it to rotation. She did quite well with rotating via tools, which is the main method her teacher has been focusing on, I believe. We also practiced dilation of figures, reflections, and other rotations by doing lots of practice problems that we made up. She became much quicker and more comfortable toward the end of our lesson. She was very positive about the whole process and eager to learn, which was very good. At this point, I feel her mental math is a little lagging, and hope to encourage her to rely on it more, in lieu of using a calculator, as I think this will help improve the speed at which she does problems.

Today the student and I talked through his finals schedule, Bio in particular, and laid out a plan. We will also be meeting for an extra session to prepare for his finals. Today he worked on filling out notes from Chapter 10 utilizing PowerPoint. We went through it together and filled in a few blanks that were missing. We also discussed his study schedule for his final in regards to what chapters he needs to focus on, and when we will review specific material together.

Tutoring review by Elaine in Medina, MN
We continued to work on and finished most of the math section in the book. The question types included proportions with numbers or variables, prime numbers, arithmetic sequences, special right triangles, solving systems of equations, word problems, and percents. We learned test taking strategies, including how to set up proportions and plug in numbers for unknown variables. The student is a strong math student. He is motivated and always has a positive attitude. We needed more review on the question types involving proportions and word problems with variables.

We reviewed for the student's test next week. We covered limit rules, how to manipulate limits and functions, definition of continuity, the delta-epsilon proof of limits, etc. We worked through several problems and she seemed much more confident about the content. She was engaged and attentive during the session.
