Tutoring review by Michael in Orono, MN
The student stated that his math unit test was postponed because his teacher introduced material from a next textbook. The topic for the day was rates of change. We reviewed the equation to find the slope of line and went through how to identify the dependent and independent variables. He seemed to find difficulty initially with identifying which was the dependent and independent variables and I gave him a tip that time is usually the independent variable because that is always constantly moving forward and cannot be affected. I told him it will not hold true forever (with more complicated problems) but it is a good assumption to make in these simpler problems. We left off the session with homework problems involving finding rates of change. He understood how to find rates of change between certain time periods very well but struggled to apply that concept when asked to predict future values assuming constant rate of change.

The student and I reviewed the SHSAT materials I assigned him for homework. Out of 50 questions, he got about 16 wrong, which is normal for his grade-level. Most of his mistakes were simple mistakes from not reading the question properly, and he was able to fix them on his own without my guidance. Overall, he is doing better on the math and is much more receptive to my feedback and guidance on the problems. After SHSAT review, we reviewed his Saturday school homework, which dealt with probability. The homework was mostly introduction to probability, which he has a good grasp of. For the next lesson, I will bring him worksheets with more advanced probability problems.

Tutoring review by Winnie in Orono, MN
The student started 8th grade today. And he is excited for the school year. His goal for the year is to make As and Bs. I hope that he will keep up this positive attitude throughout the academic year. I was also happy that he started using his agenda for the school year without me reminding him to. I think this is a great sign; I feel that he is becoming more organized as a student! He has 2 essays due Monday. He started his science essay which he first made an outline of what would be in his essay. He came up with key ideas for each paragraph. He then started writing his rough draft. After finishing each paragraph, I would proof read it while he did a transition math problem. In his math class, the teacher started talking about transition, but did not go into great detail about it. I introduced the topic to him so that he can be prepared for it. Overall, our session went well!

This was our first session for this semester. She and I went over constructing arcs and shapes using the compass and protractor. We additionally went over angle bisectors, perpendicular bisectors, and additional vocabulary terms, and transformations. I challenged her to continue to practice.

Tutoring review by Alex in Orono, MN
The student and I reviewed his homework problems. They dealt with inverse functions and zeros of polynomials. He seems to understand inverse function very well after having this lesson and last lesson. Finding zeros of polynomials was new to this session so he just started to understand how to work with them.
