Tutoring review by Joe in North Campus, NM
The student and I covered statistics concepts of range, mean, median, mode, and standard deviation. We examined real data sets and determined the descriptive statistics, and the student was able to answer the questions on her study guide. She is highly motivated and wants to perform well in her stats course, so it is easy to engage and explain the concepts to her. I recommended that she try a standard deviation problem with different numbers to reinforce her understanding of how to calculate the mean, sigma, and square roots required to reach the standard deviation number.

Today I taught the student how to do trapezoidal approximation. We went through the section in his textbook and worked through an example together. Then I had him do a couple of problems on his own. We also related trapezoidal approximations back to Riemann sums. This seemed to help the student better understand Riemann sums. He did very well with the concepts. Lastly, I had him doing problems from previous exams that he got incorrect to start our review for his final later this month.

During this session, the student and I worked on practice problems for the quantitative portion of the ISEE test. On the practice problems I found, there were around 15 problems for part 1 of the Quantitative portion of the test. We worked through about 20 problems within the two hour time frame. He worked very hard with these and reasoned through many of the problems. It was a hard session, but a good session. He is an excellent student who is not afraid of a challenge. For the next session, we are going to work on Part 2 of the quantitative section of the test.

Today we continued working on Indefinite Integration including trigonometry functions. We also worked on few problems solving differential equation where the student had to integrate the second derivative, and again the first derivative in order to obtain the equation of the function. Lastly, we worked on Integration by Substitution; however, without needing to change variables. All in all it was about 60 problems with very little degree of difficulty. It was very repetitive work, which I assured him that practice, especially with Integration by Substitution, will come in very handy when the problems do become more challenging.

The student finished her math homework on exponents, which she understood. Then we reviewed multiplying and dividing decimals, and at first she had some confusion but then understood. Then we reviewed proportions and did some word problems. Lastly I gave her another study tool, how to use flashcards. She made some flashcards for her science class.
