Tutoring review by Kevin in Pottstown, PA
We covered inequalities and word problems. The student was challenged with inequalities and equations involving negative numbers, but was eager to learn, and quickly began understanding his mistakes. I reviewed with him the study skills we had previously used, and made sure he was using them effectively. We spent the session doing homework I had assigned, and also doing extra practice with negative numbers.

Tutoring review by Alexandra in Pottstown, PA
This was our first meeting, and the student spent most of the hour and a half working on his most recent homework assignment. The majority of the problems involved simplifying radicals and polynomials with radicals, and required him to add, subtract, divide, and multiply those terms in order to simplify very complicated expressions. He is highly proficient at the basic skills, i.e. flipping numbers around in his head and finding basic roots. I think he mainly struggles with knowing where to start when given very complicated problems with many components that need to be simplified. We worked on taking each individual component at a time, such as a single large coefficient or a simple polynomial, and breaking them down one at a time to arrive at the answer. I also gave him some test taking strategies, like making use of the entire time given to take a test and moving slowly through each problem to eliminate accuracy errors. I also emphasized that he needs to write everything down!!! Because he can add/ subtract/ multiply/ divide so quickly, he tends to do those steps in his head, but without writing everything down it is easy to lose track in a question that requires 15-20 lines of work to simplify. I thought this was a very good first session. I showed him the practice problems online and gave him some pointers for studying for his upcoming test. His homework scores look fairly high, and we will continue working on building confidence when faced with problems that look intimidating but ultimately break down to performing simple operations. If he can slow down and carefully write each step for the problems he works on, I think we will have no problem improving his test grades in his course!

Concepts covered included linear equation word problems and direct variation problems. The student said he had a deeper understanding of linear functions as our session progressed. The main strategy was to show how direct variation problems were a special subset of linear equations. I gave the student additional examples.

Tutoring review by Wolfgang in Pottstown, PA
After discussing a cultural note about how to address people when writing a letter, the present perfect tense forms were reviewed. Then exercise 8 on page 9 followed. The vocabulary for lesson 1 was introduced, read and explained including special verb forms in the past and present perfect tense in all persons. The umlaut played an important part in selected verbs. Finally, the text "Auf dem Flughafen" was read and translated as well as the exercises following them done (up to question 5 of Fragen, p. 19).

Tutoring review by Melissa in Pottstown, PA
The student has already had some quizzes and tests this week, and he still has his English assessment going on as well as his math test. We spent the session working on his math review. He has an understanding of how to work the problems, but sometimes it's complicated to remember which equation or which form of the equation he should be solving for. He should continue to work on this before his test. Hopefully after reviewing the work we did together, he will feel comfortable enough to do well on the test.
