Tutoring review by David in San Bruno, CA
The student and I met to prepare for his final exam. He has done quite a bit of work on his own and has a good deal of familiarity with the relevant concepts. We discussed these issues as we worked on some past AP problems. It was a great session!

Today we covered trig identities. We started with finding exact values using the trig identities. The student tended to forget some parts of this chapter, but I managed to bring his memory back (cofunction identities, reciprocal identities, Pythagorean identities, etc.).

Calculus - we worked on chain rule applications. Some of the questions we focused on asked to simply take the chain rule, which the student was very strong at and simply needed to practice a few times. Other questions asked to find the value of the derivative given certain values, and in that respect, we simply worked through the process and set him up to solve it. Once we established how to derive that formula, the student seemed more comfortable applying the method to other problems.

The student and I practiced his multiples of 3 on our way to the library. We then did a worksheet for math that focused on place value and the values of each individual number depending on what place it is in. We filled out his assignment notebook to prepare for tomorrow.

Tutoring review by Brandy in San Bruno, CA
In this session, we discussed the book the student is currently reading, the final installment of the Maze Runner series. We discussed major themes and he did some simple character analysis for me. I felt he had a strong understanding of the story and characters. We then went through a rather difficult reading comprehension worksheet about a speech given by John F. Kennedy, in which he had to analyze the meanings of metaphorical passages like "passing the torch" and "whoever tries to ride the back of the tiger will end up inside." He found this rather difficult, but this was expected because it is somewhat above his reading level, and I was glad to just expose him to a small passage. I was pleased that he was receptive to it, and seemed to pick up on the ideas quickly as we discussed them together. He then did a 6 minute free-writing exercise on "imagine you're in The Maze Runner" and we finished by going over some of his homework, a 5 sentence summary of "what will the purpose be" of a research paper he is beginning to work on in class. He will be researching video games.

Tutoring review by Connor in San Bruno, CA
Today we studied line integrals. Most of the student's problem is that she did not understand, geometrically, what a line integral was. Once that was explained, it was just a matter of applying the formula in creative ways. The other snag hit when we had to parametrize a curve in order to integrate it. We did two such problems and she understood the concept and was able to do further problems on her own.
